My Dad worked at the Ford plant from 1949 to 1970 and in the 50's they
had a take your kids to work day. I went to that for several years
and we toured the caves and the power plant. The were still making
glass at the plant in my first years there, but I don't think they were getting the sand from the caves. It was one of the highlights of my youth.

I am ammazed wonderful site full of witty wordsmithing and adventurous apreciation of Arcitecture and the of the underground wildlife! I am so glad you have a no disturbance policy as that assures that others may be able to enjoy the depths of the earth. In respect to recentt deaths may I say to all BEWARE OF CARBON MONOXIDE IF EXPLORING!! Im sure many have been in the caves near Plato and High bridge but remember NO FIRES and beware of the signs of oxegyn depravation. Have any of you explorers heard of the many caves in Southeast Minnesota? Anyone ever hear of the Bunkers on the U of M land in Rosemount? anyway nice site take it easy! Drew

My own underground adventures pale in comparison to these. I've only gone like 40 feet into a giant sewer pipe then left because it smelled nasty and I was afraid of getting some disease. I also went into an underground coal thing by a railroad that was used to load the coal onto barges but it was small. Now I want to get my friend to go exploring with me. Oh and one time I went into an "abandoned" building but heard noises and left in a hurry because I was by myself and didn't want to risk getting killed by some crazy vagrant. There isn't much to explore, though. Ahh, I wish I could've been there for these adventures.

Cool site! Saw the article about the cave deaths, and wondered if they were the same caves we spent a ton of time in almost 30 years ago when I was a kid growing up in the cities. From your site I would guess they were the then fully-explorable cobbs caves, but we always thought they were the ford sand mines.

The entrance was a storm sewer on the river below shepard road, near the old Civic Center. There were steel bars, but a few had been cut and bent so you could squeeze into the sewer tunnel. The sewer always had some water in it, and there were large chasms in the floor filled with quickly running water of unknown depth. After carefully walking up the sewer for about a half mile, there was a collapsed wall that led into an enormous network of caves. Many of the dead-end tunnels had names based on geological or man-made features, the grafitti, or the junk contained within. It was quite the party palace in the mid 70's, and we usually ran into several other explorers on our trips there.

Anyone have any insight on which caves these were? From the location it sounds like the long-lost river entrance to cobbs caves. In any event, have lots of great (ok maybe fuzzy!) memories from our "trips" down there--

I am sure that you all have heard that three teenagers died today somewhere in the Lillydale caves. Last week there was a major fire in another cave and only a couple of weeks ago some kids found a few tons of gun powder in the Yoerg Brewery caves. All of these incidents will surely lead the permanent closure sealing of these caves like so many other caves in the Mississippi river gorge, e.g. Carvers cave and Fountain cave. These caves, though their purpose is often forgotten, are an extremely important part of the history here in the twin cities. From the pure content of the silica for glass production to the mushroom growing, beer and cheese aging they clearly have a rich and varied history. My intention is to form an advocacy group that will fight for the controlled preservation of these caves. I would like those who are interested in joining me in a crusade to protect an important part of twincities history to contact me at the email address above.

Hey Shannon, the caves are not haunted, nothing is haunted, its in your head and in urban legands, but they are made of rock, so yes, they rock, but if by rock you actually mean party, then yes, please get drunk and take off your clothes

Holy mother of crustless antelope!!! This site is awesome! I have always looked at the enterence to the e.b. steam tunnels (maybe) from the bridge and seen the enterences in the park, leaving me with a desire to adventure..but alas, no one as of yet has wanted to join me in my search for adventure...*sigh* I've been reading this site for, oh, the past 4 hours, and I have to say, it is much more interesting than studying for my Chem test. If there are any squads going out, send me some mail and I'll happily drive from Roch(if it's during the summer). Stay safe, stay sober (I've seen someone rock climb drunk......very not cool), and stay hunting.

Wow, stumbled upon this site this evening, not entirely sure how... but being born/raised in St. Paul, many of the Missions:Ruins features got my attention. I don't know how many times I have driven by the old Hamm's brewery, wishing I could take a self-guided tour. I will never forget the smell of that place, going down minnehaha ave. when the brewery was still operating. I was especially interested in the hillcrest bowl piece.... I was sad to see that place bulldozed, I spent a great deal of time at Hafner's as a kid. Lots of fond memories of the place, I so wish I had been with you guys when you gained entry. Would have been great. Thanks for the great pictures and words. An aspiring Urban Explorer--Jay.

Hey, I've lived here for almost 10 years and was even attending the U of M when y'all formed but i am a big time loner freak and social outcast who doesn't like talking to people... anyway thanks I finally found out the true name of "Hell House", which I earlier emailed you a link for pictures of the inside of. In case you didn't get that, its here on my blog: http://www.livejournal.com/users/laurapalmer813/120856.html#cutid1.

I'm sad we've never crossed paths, i would have loved to have explored with you. It would have been nice to have someone other than myself and sometimes my hubby to explore with. But water under the bridge you know, now i'm moving away :( Anyway keep up the good work!

Hello there "Master" - LOL!

What a fag! "Don't you even give me shit about where people come from! I get so tired of that crap"! Oh, I haven't seen a little tantrum like that since my son was 2! You little piece of shit, you talk so tough for a little Amish prick.

To be a nice guy, I will entertain your question though: Why didn't I reply to your first little tantrum sooner? The answer is simple, really, buttfuck, it's because I didn't fucking feel like it. How's that sound, peckerless wonder?

I'm sure you're very excited about summer vacation coming up! Are you going to work at the BP again this summer?

Good job, sleepin Jesus.

Sincerely,
SFC
