Comments:

William (Pete) Ralph Evans was my grand uncle. I recently received his military service record from the National Archives. The records list him transferring from U.S. Naval Air Missile Test Center, Point Magu, CA on 31 Aug 1947 to join Air Transport Squadron SEVEN. Her served as an Air Transport Officer, Space Control, Guam M.I. from Oct. 1947-Dec 1947, when he then became the OIC, VR-7, NATS Detachment Okinawa from Dec 1947-Feb 1948. His fitness reports have him as the OIC, VR-6 Detachment Okinawa from Dec 1947-Apr 1949, after which he transferred to NAS San Diego with Air Transportation Squadron 32 as a Ferry Pilot (Follow). Should your organization have any information/pictures to share, I would appreciate being contacted.

I recently received a trunk from my uncle who has passed away. The trunk had My uncle's name , T.W. Hukriede and VR-5 stenciled on it in several places. My uncle served in the Navy from 1941 to 1949. I thought he had participated in WWII on a ship, but apparently was in this obscure part of the military, NATS. There most likely isn't any one out there who knew him as he was 93 years old when he passed away. Please E-mail me any info you have on VR-5 or Theodore Hukriede.

My father, Miles E. Twaddell, was a U.S. Naval Aviator serving in VR-6. I grew up seeing the squadron patch, one among several,on his flight jacket.
On several occasions, my mother, brother, sisters and I greeted my father on his arrival at some Naval Air Station as he, the aircraft commander,
landed and taxied the aircraft to its parking area. Excellent aviator and fascinating aircraft. My best wishes to everyone on this website!

Comments:

In the winter of 1961 my assigned C-118 #647 went off radar after take-off out of Gander, Newfoundland. A muffled explosion was thought to have been heard by Gander. Half our crew was lost and we at Norfolk were without a plane. The Canadian and U.S.A militaries and all ships at sea found nothing of the event. Later, we teamed with another group and were assigned to #650. In 1961 I was reassigned to Sangley Point, Philippines to the Avionics division. Nearly a year later, I received a late call at the barracks that #650 was on the ground at Clark AFB. The caller invited me to come up to see him and the plane. I arranged for a rec-car and driver and drove the 50 miles to Clark. It was a pleasure to see #650 and my old crew mate. Thank you Freddie Guth for the call. You New York guys are alright! It was good to hug my old plane.

Gentlemen and Ladies: I must say it! Enough is enough!!!!! Our government has failed us. Those of us who were on the ground in Vietnam for air evacuation of troops, or for what ever reason have been handed the responsibility of proof of boots on the ground by the Veterans Administration. As each veteran learns of disease\diseases in his or her body caused by exposure to Agent Orange, he or she is told that there are no records verifying they were on the ground in the Republic Of Vietnam. Their basic right as a veteran to receive compensation resulting from injuries incurred while serving their country in a war zone have been denied. We have been stripped of integrity and denied due process by a heartless administration. No veteran should have to prove his service to his country. That is what records are for!!! However, there are no flight records in any archive to prove we were there. WHY??? Only one reason, it is the policy of the United States Government to have those records destroyed a few months or years after we are discharged from active duty. It is therefore incumbent upon each veteran to fight on their own for their rights. This is demeaning to every veteran and shows how little this country appreciates our sacrifices. A colossal administration must be fought for proof of his\her qualification to receive compensation for injures or for illnesses incurred while on active duty, which each deserves. Your best chance of receiving your benefits is through contact of your Senator and Representative in Washington. Ask for phone numbers and addresses of registered veteran advocates who will help you fight for your rights. Good luck and God bless in your effort. Never give up. I didn't!

I WAS INTRODUCED PROPERLY TO AERODYNIMICS ON AN EMERGENCY FLIGHT TO THE NORTHERN MOST ISLAND OF Japanese IN 1963. IT SEEMS THAT AN AIRMAN HAD AN ACCIDENT WHICH LEFT HIM CRITICAL. WE FLEW UP TO RETRIEVE HIM TO TACHI HOSPITAL IN THE DEAD OF NIGHT. WE RAN INTO AN ELECTRICAL STORM. IT WAS LIGHTENING AND HAILING LIKE CRAZY. I WAS SITTING AFT WHEN SUDDENLY THE STATIC ELECTRICITY BUILT UP SO FAST THT IT HAD NO PLACE TO GO, BUT OFF THE TAIL OF THE PLANE. THERE WAS A TERRIRIC EXPLOSION OFF THE TAIL OF THE PLACE (C-121). I THOUGHT WE HAD BEEN STRUCK BY LIGHTENING. I JUMPED OUT OF MY SEAT AND RAN FORWARD. GUY "BJ" REEVES WAS THE FLIGHT ENGINEER. I SAID TO HIM "WHAT JUST HAPPENED, DID WE JUST GET HIT BY LIGHTENINGY?" HE SAID, "YOU SEE THOSE LITTLE THINGS TRAILING ON THE WING?" I SAID SURE, "HE SAID "KNOW WHAT THEY ARE FOR"? "I SAID SURE, I'M AN ADR"! HE SAID, "THEY DIDN'T WORK. THEY WERE OVELOADED BY THIS ELECTRICAL STORM WE JUST HIT". AT THAT MOMENT MY ATTENTION WAS DRAWN TO THE WINDSHIELD OF THE AIRCRAFT. IT SOUNDED LIKE MACHINE GUN BULLETS HITTING THE WINDSHIELD, BUT IT WAS ONLY HAIL. I EXPECTED IN A FEW SECONDS TO FEEL THE EMPACT OF EXPLODING WINDOWS. THAT NEVER HAPPENED AND I WAS QUITE RELIEVED, TO SAY THE LEST. I HEARD THE ENGINS SLOW AND REALIZED THAT "BJ" SLOWED THE PLANE TO PREVENT MORE SATIC ELECTRICITY FROM BUILDING UP. 'BJ' SAID, "YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN ON THE FLIGHT WITH ME WHEN THE SAME THING HAPPENED EXCEPT THAT FIRE ROLLED DOWN THE ISLE OF THE PLANE BEFORE IT POPPED OFF THE TAIL OF THE PLANE." NEEDLESS TO SAY I DID NOT SLEEP ON THAT TRIP THAT NIGHT. THOUGHT YOU MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN ONE OF MANY STORIES I HAVE IN MY MEMORY FROM THE TWO YEARS I SERVED IN VR-7, DET A. IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE AND I SHARE SOME OF IT OFTEN WITH RELATIVES AND FRIENDS. I'VE GOT MANY MORE I COULD TELL, BUT TIME AND SPACE WILL NOT ALLOW. HAVE A GREAT REUNION IN SAN ANTONIO.

Best time ever. Saw places most only read about& was paid a little while doing it. Attended the 2013 reunion in Norfolk (Lake Wright)Virginia and learned lots of squadron history. My duty was FTS & my 1st trip was to Vietnam with troops from Fort Gordon Georgia. Lost #3 on take-off leaving Nam and spent over 2 weeks at Clark AFB waiting for a replacement. Couldn't have ask for a better assignment.

My father Roger Dale Malone joined the Navy 1-20-56 and dicharged to the Navy Reserve 9-517-59. He later went into the Air Force for a short time. His DD214 shows the last assignement was Air Transport Squadron SEVEN. I have the patch on the inside of his photo album.

Daddy was sick for many, many years, and passed away in 2005. I was looking to find out information possibly on his wife and child that he had while in Hawaii. I have lots of picture of people he was enlisted with. I have to check, some have names, some photos do not.

Do you have any advise for me locating my half brother? Or would you be interested in photos that I have of him and his buddys?
