Comments:

This is so incredible! I lived on Iverson Street and attended Hillcrest Heights Elementary School in 1958. Then, we moved to District Heights where I attended Mt. Calvary. I graduated from La Reine High School in 1965 -- second graduating class! I was always in Marlow Heights at movies! Back then, it was safe to walk anywhere!

Once in District Heights, I joined the District Heights Theatre of the Arts and was in a lot of plays there: Peter Pan, Carnival, Carousel, Hello Dolly, to name a few. I've been blessed to be able to keep up with most of my theatre buddies, although many have passed away...

I still write to my French Teacher, Sr. David, from La Reine so I can keep up with the good Sisters!

Thanks, Chuck, for making this website possible! I can't wait to see who I might hear from!

Nice being so close to DC. Could hitchhike in and protest the Vietnam war. (It was a safe time and place to live) Skipping school meant Smithsonian Museums and Washington Cathedral. Hot Shoppes was the place to hang out with friends and meet new ones. Iverson Mall was awesome at the time. Lots of good friends surviving one of the touhest times in our history, generation gap, pigs, pushers, narcs, protesting Vietnam. Loved & lost Hendrix, Joplin, Jim. "Make love not war" peace brother, groovy. WOW. Good times... Didn't actually get to graduate with my Potomas HS class, instead it was Crossland Evening HS, had a baby. Anyone who remembers me, love to hear from you...

Hello,
I found your website by accident. I have been trying to search for Barber Shops that might have been in the P.G. County area around 1957.
I am not sure what area, though. I am trying to find my father who would be 78. He was part owner of a Barber Shop. His name is William. I don't know his last name. If anyone would know of any resources that may help me on my search that would be great.

Thanks,
Kim
what a great site!

Where to start!

Comments:

Hiya, I was a USAF brat and we moved from Baltimore to DC as my dad was stationed at the new Air Research & Development Command at Andrews. Until I was 14, most time was spent at Andrews sub-teen and teen club (anyone else take dancing from Mr. Pallimore and know what triple time is?) and the pool in summer.

We lived in Fleishmann's Village from 1960, before that were on Keating Street in Hillcrest Heights. I remember going to the end of Keating Street and the "big woods" with other kids that got engulfed when Iverson Mall was eventually built. No one worried about playing away from their front or back yards in those days. I'd ride my bicycle from age 10 from Keating Street down to my piano teacher (Mary Withers) every week. The best bit was cycling home with a crispy pizza from the Pizza Pan in the Hillcrest Heights shopping center...the "poor relation" to the new Marlow Heights centre.

I wanted to go to the new Sandymount, but my parents put me in St. Francis Xavier near Annacostia as Holy Family school was a grade behind me in adding classes. We rode these horrid old rundown WM&A buses that were rented by the parish along with the Holy Comforter (Kentucky Ave NE) kids but had the nicest drivers who would take us an extra bit further nearer to someones house if it was raining instead of just dumping us at the regular stop. We were mercifully allowed to sing in the back of the bus. The Shirelles, Ronettes, Motown ruled!

In Fleishmann's Village we had a lot of woods to play in as well as the old Fleishmann farm buildings which were sort of still there until cleared for building Carriage Hill which backed right up to our house. We played war games with the boys jumping out of trees and dared each other to climb the silo of the old barn abandoned by GLY contruction company. I now shudder to think about it...it was so unsafe. Before Kennedy and the helicopter, Eisenhower used to be driven from Andrews to DC on Suitland Parkway which ran right below the old farm. We'd hear on the radio that the president had just landed at Andrews. If we hurried, us kids could run through the woods, down the old dirt road to "Military Hill" (the embankment about the parkway). If we had enough time, we'd scramble/roll down the hill to stand by the parkway to wave. There was always secret service about in the bushes (not very well hidden!) and they'd laugh at us crazy girls. Once Carriage Hill was built we hung out at the pool in summer. I read someone say they learned to drive in the upper carpark at the GEM store....didn't everybody?

I remember WPGC and met "Tiger Bob Raleigh" with my friends at the station for a school project. A couple of months later my parents and I stood waiting in the cold for 8 hours to pass by President Kennedy's casket in the Capitol building, when I saw him again outside having a cigarette ...he was in tears.

La Reine really was a pretty cool school. In my senior year I used to go with a Crossland boy and remember sitting in his 64 Ford Falcon with a 289 and a reverse hood scoop (it was dark blue) in the back row of the Jr Hot Shoppes (the elite place to be seen). Wow, all those muscle cars...the sounds, the scent of Castrol is still with me! Lots of guys worked on cars, I wonder today if kids even know where the dipstick is? Thanks to him I do know where my dipstick is ;) Hay, does anyone remember Father Brogan at Holy Family who was given a GTO?

Went to the old Washington School for Secretaries in the Nat Press Building and was caught in the DC Riots of 68. I walked 30 blocks to upper Georgetown to see if a friend could drive me home, but he'd gone. Hiked all the way back and then over to L'Enfant Plaza to COMSAT to see if any of my dad's friends could take me(dad was away. Eventually someone there took me home to his family in Potomac. When I took my heels off (we had to wear heels, hats and gloves at WSS) my toes were all bloody from walking so much. It was strange to see the National Guard were on every street corner for months afterwards all the way out to Friendship Heights, but it never stopped me from going to The Hayloft or Rands when I was feeling "Blockish" (Phil Flowers amazing version of MacArthur Park is still in my head). Other years I'd have been at the Crazy Horse, Old Macs or New and the Cellar Door in my hip-hugger flares. Was Someplace Else the SE club with the black lights and everyone wore white tee shirts? Moving on to Ventuno 21 was a mistake....too much lip gloss and and leisure suits.

I moved north to New Hampshire (dad's home state) in 77 after having lived in Bethesda quite a while. I feel lucky to have lived where I did when I did. It was a very innocent age of drive-ins, fake-ids, cheap pitchers of beer, wine-coolers, school, church or VFW dances, proms, muscle cars and min-skirts. Today's kids seem to prefer massive limos to their proms, weekends in posh hotels and designer dresses and designer cocktails. Hello....after our senior prom at the Sheraton (I think) in a very modest high neck gown, we changed out of our formal wear and piled in cars and drove to OC to spend the night on the beach partying in cutoffs and bikinis on blankets. Something tells me that they'd never get the creepy cheap thrill from a midnight cruise down Tucker Road looking for the goat man! And, erm...what are they going to do when they are in their 50s-60s for oldies? As my parents couldn't picture a golden age of rock and roll (anymore than their's envisioned the golden age of swing)...WTF are they going to do with rap, hip-hop or bass & drums???!!!

Since 2000 I've lived in the UK with my British husband. We were in NH for many years before, but he was missing his family so we moved back and are truly settled here for good.

Oh, how did I come to your site? I was looking for Lebanese spices, etc. I had got the urge for a Steak In A Sack and thought I might find the recipe. No luck, but I see Steak In A Sack is still an institution.

Cheers for a great site, Chuck, and wonderful memories eveyone.

What schools did you attend, and when?:

Temple Hills ele.,Sandymount ele., Stoddert, Potomac grad 1968

When was the last time you were in the area?:

4th of July party this summer

What are some of your best memories of growing up in the area?:

"the group" at Sandymount, Mr. King and his musical instruments. Band in Jr. High. Girl Scouts and Job's Daughters

Comments:

We were considered to be the farthest away from Sandymount, and we had to cross St. Barnabas Rd going to and from school so everyone from our part had to meet and walk together going home from school,so the crossing guard would get us all across St. Barnabas Rd. at one time. The development was new when we moved there and we had quite a few years that there was just a few blocks of houses, a lot of woods,an old tobacco barn, a few streams that the boys would swing across on ropes and vines. One spring the boys took lawn mowers to an area that was cleared and formed a baseball field, but adults got in the way of that. There was a quarry, and the whole area was rich in fossils. The area was full of wild blackberries, we picked buckets full in the summer that mom would make into all sorts of good things. It really makes me laugh when I see little packages of blackberries in the grocery store now.

I also remember some of the interesting things that happened because we lived close to Andrews Air Force Base. The pilots tested and practiced flying jets and helicopters and it was not at all unusual to have them flying overhead and breaking the sound barrier. And the helicopters would fly over low and hover and go up and fly in circles, then hover again. News was often live on TV and they would announce that the president had taken off in the helicopter to return to the white house, and we would look out the front door and the three helicopters would fly over the house.

There were 6 children in my family: Charlie was the oldest and went to Crossland. I'm next, then my brother Robin, my sister Nancy, and my brother Tim all attended and graduated from Potomac. Patrick had to go to Southern HS when our Dad moved to A.A. county.

I worked at the Hecht Co. in my senior year, Charlie worked at the Highs in Marlow Heights Shopping Center, Robin, Tim, and Patrick worked at Dunkin Donuts, Nancy worked at the drugstore in Iverson Mall. After graduation I went to Nursing School in Baltimore and stayed and worked in the area after I graduated, mostly in the area of Public Health.

I have enjoyed reading this web site. Sadly, I have never had the experience of hanging out at Steak in a Sack, it was not on my mother's approved list of things that I could do. So I look forward to the next time there is a meeting of the Marlow Heights group!

Keep telling others about this sight and adding to it, it's great!

I moved to the DC/MD area in 1960. I attended Lyndon Hill Elementary, then Forestville Elementary, later Francis Scott Key, and then graduated at Central in 1970. I've been away from the area for a long time but still have great memories of the area. Although I lived mostly in Seat Pleasant, visits to the Marlow Heights and Suitland area were frequent, including the Suitland Bowling Alley and stop ins at the Trading Post, where I bought my first pair of Chucks! Remember those? I was broken hearted when my parents moved to Millwood, where I was in the Central school zone, leaving behind many friends that went on to Suitland. Nevertheless, I made many new friends from Carmody Hills, Seat Pleasant, and Capitol Heights. I would love to hear from any of your that I might have know back then, and share some memories of those great times. Please email me soon.

Just wanted everyone to know it's SAFE to go back to Steak In A Sak on Saturday afternoons. All you grits who thought you were "bad", need to show everyone how "bad" you can be, by showing up. It's fun, the food is still great, and it's nice to get to talk with people you might not have "hung with" but wanted to talk to them. Maybe it wasn't cool to talk to your friend's younger brother or sister, well, nobody cares about that crap anymore! You could stop in for 10 minutes and say Hi!

I really enjoyed meeting everyone on Saturday at the Steak in a Sack. Even though I did not grow up in Marlow Hieghts, I was always in the area for different reasons. I worked at Iverson Mall, Fair Lanes and drove a Yellow Cab, with our Cab Stand right at the Giant and Steak in a Sack. I write a Blog and will eventually be doing a post on Marlow Heights. My last post was about the Red Barn in Coral Hills - http://BoomerTwilight.Blogspot.com - Chuck has done a real good job keeping the memories alive, and I commend him. In the Red Barn posting, there is mention of Silver Hill and Waldorf. I hope you check it out and let me know what you think.

See you again.

What great memories of the Hillcrest Heights and Marlow Heights area. I am the Assistant Chief of the Silver Hill VFD, so I am in the area all the time. Silver Hill VFD has gotten me where I am today. I am a Fire Inspector for the Naval District Washington Fire Dept. in Washington DC.

My old street has not changed alot, except for the faces. The families who live there keep it looking nice. As for the old eating places, there is one place still open that I suggest all of you go to, it is the Hillcrest Carry Out, on Iverson Street, next to Family Furniture. If you want a good home cooked meal, that's the place to go.

For those of you who remember Eddies Bakery, his son is a Fire fighter with the Naval District Washington FD. Eddy and his wife still live in the area as well.

I could go on forever...
What a great site!!!!
Thank You for all the good memories!!

Comments:

We lived on Afton Street for many years - my children went to Holy Family School and Potomac Senior High. I worked for Dr. Charles Colao up behind the shopping center for a while. Belonged to the Marlow heights Garden Club and some of the members may still live there. Unfortunately, some of my old friends have passed away - but I still remember the Dorsetts, Mattinglys, Moran, Garden, Fredericks, Drurys and the whole bunch - too numerous to mention. We had some great times down our way. My son found this site and I think who ever put it together has done a great job. Best wishes, Louise Ciuca

Like Gary just before me, I also worked at Hobby Headquarters, from around 1974-1976. Also, my father was principal at Benjamin Stoddard from 1967 to 1970, before becoming principal at Oxon Hill. Previously, he taught at Suitland Junior High, and my mother also taught at Suitland Senior High for a while.

My orthodontist was in Iverson Mall. I spent hours around appointments cruising the mall, always Doktor's Pets, Marvin's Sport City, the record store, Montgomery Ward. So many things for a teen to buy! When later I worked at Hobby Headquarters, it was neat to walk down to the Murphy's and have lunch at the counter - 2 hot dogs for $1.

Thanks for the site, very nice.

I was born in December of 1967 (a little younger than you) but we lived in Dennis Grove apts. (now called Oxon hill village) When i was 2 we moved to Parkway apts. on 23rd pkwy then before kindergarten we moved to Alpine apts. right off fisher rd I was small at the time but i do remember Grits and their dress code and that red barn on your site really brought back some memories. BTW it was turned into a Jerry's then into a laundry mat after that (not positive about the laundry mat) by the 80's when i went to Potomac high school it was way different than the class of 76. My sister graduated from Potomac in 1980 i went from 83 (9th grade) to 1987 By that time it was tied with Suitland high for the worst school in PG county anyway i could go on and on but if you want to know anything about me or people i knew just e-mail me.

I have signed the guest book in the past, though it has been a while.

I moved to Marlow Heights in December of 1969, when I began work for Peoples Life Insurance Company in Washington, DC. I lived at the Marlow Madison apartments across Branch Avenue from the shopping center. Remember being able to walk to Iverson Mall in the evening/night, safely.

My sister, Esther graduated in 1970, and we moved in together in the apartments on 28th Avenue, next to the Recreation Center. Remember going to the Giant Food Store, using one of those small carts, as we didn't have a car for a couple of years, until my sister bought a 1973 Plymouth Duster. I worked at Home Beneficial Life Insurance Company which at the time was in the breezeway between the Hecht Company and Hahn's Shoes. Those were the best of times. It was like an extended family. Still communicate with some of my friends/co-workers. Then I took on a 2nd job at the Hecht Company at nights as a Security Checker for the dressing rooms. After that part-time job, I worked at the Red Barn as a Hostess. Remember having to go around with a pitcher serving coca cola, and in my long red checkered dress having to wet mop the floors and clean the tables of chicken grease...(o:

Also frequented Rector's restaurant...remember the New Year's Eve parties, and the Steak in the Sack, Hot Shoppe's Cafeteria, Lerner's, Marlow Theater, etc.

Would love to hear from old friends, acquaintances.

Wonderful to know that those in the old neighborhood are keeping touch. I'm the baby in the Brami Family; having two older brothers Neil and Luc. I grew up in the typical brick duplex at the corner of Keith and Lyons Street. I graduated from Potomac High School(85) and left the neighboorhood to go to school at the UMD College Park. After college I lived in DC,Virginia but finally settled in MD. I currently live in Rockville with my wife and two kids.

I looking forward to seeing who's on site and reaquainting.

Working at the Suitland RedBarn

Comments:

Seeing the Marlow Heights shopping Center & Iverson Mall signs brought back quick memories! I used to work at the Saint Barnabas RD, Silver Hill Rd (Suitland), and Coral Hills RedBarn locations. I had started out at the Suitland store in Jan. 1972. When I was a safety patrol at Bradbury Heights Elementary, we watched the construction of the new RedBarn store on Marlboro Pike & couldn't wait until it finally opened! It was a rule to put book covers on all of your issued books at school. The RedBarn, as a promotional item, gave out book covers that had coupons along the bottom for a free item per month with no purchase necessary. I wish I had taken pictures of the RedBarn Stores when i had worked there, and, of my co-workers. I was rotated to the "Saint B" & Coral Hills stores when I had become an assistant manager, and, then, finally, I was rotated back to my "home store" in Suitland. When I had started out at the Suitland store, I remember the summer nights we would hang out for a little while in the parking lot after the closing shift. You could smell the donuts frying up at the Suitland Bakery that was 3 doors down. The whole night air smelled like fresh donuts, and, the pizzas being made by Mr. Tony's! Lost RedBarn loves, too, in the summer of '73, when Cindy (nicknamed "Stormy") came to work at the Suitland store while visiting from from Altoona, PA. Now, the summer of '08 is about to begin and each summer I think back to the summer of '73 when I worked as much as I could at "the Barn", whenever they needed me to come in. And, where else could you find the "Keel" of fried chicken and people asking you what a keel was? We would sometimes say "it's the last part that goes over the fence". When we 1st got the salad bar, I used to take a keel and cut it up and sprinkle it all over a salad with french dressing - it was great! Or, go next door to the Highs Store and buy a small cup of vanialla ice cream and put that over the new hot cherry pies we started to serve new, too. We were making ourselves double & triple meat Busters before there was a Wendy's! Oh, and when we started serving breakfast, we would sneak the bacon and eat it (it was pre-cooked, just had to warm it up on the grill) & our manager would yell at us "you're eating up all the profits, now go Pearl Brite everything that shines!!". Remember when we had to start using that chicken wash idea they had come up with? that lemon & whatever it was mixed in? I learned what "cutting the mustard" meant, when we would dilute the mustard with the pickle juice from those big cans the pickles came in. Being taught how to snap that bone in the thigh pieces before it went into the pressure cooker? Yep, I miss those days - I didn't think I would when I was working there, but, I do.

I would love to hear from ANYONE from that time. We can talk about anything! My father worked at Sheehe Ford for a while. I remember we used to go to the grocery store in Marlow Heights and the Hahn's shoes was there. Remember that little exit out of the back that used to be right there? I remember Rectors Restaurant and was was that little diner in the shopping center? I am oo excited! I have two brothers, Jack and Victor.

I would love to hear from people who graduated in '68 and '69. I moved to California in the early 70's, and returned in the late 70's. I have pretty much lost contact with my classmates and friends. It would be great to hear from all of you.
