Teen Club dances and fun in the snow

Comments:

I assisted Lois Adams (my aunt) with teen club, and registered everyone as they entered. My fondest memories are of all the kids who constantly came and went into my home, attending the football games and watching Ron Adams play, coaching the girls in the Silver Hill Boys and Girls Club, and having fun in the snow doing doughnuts on the top level of the Iverson Mall parking lot along with my daughter and brother. I also enjoyed the many times my friend, Pam Barkanic, and I ate at the Steack in the Sack.

Comments:

Unfortunately I don't remember as much as I'd like. I lost everything due to a tragic theft some years back.

***If Any of you guys attended school the same years as I've listed above, could you please email me. I had a tragic theft of everything I own back in the 90's and I have only been able to get a couple of photos of my childhood.

I was in the following classes,

Hillcrest Heights Elementary
69/70 Kindergarden Teacher; Mandell
70/71 1st Grade teacher; Williford
71/72 2nd Grade teacher: Hodge
72/73 3rd Grade teacher; Sutterman (I can't read my print-out from Upper Malboro very clearly. She was a hot red-headed woman (maybe that will get the guys memories rolling lol)
73/74 4th Grade teacher; Linhan same problem as above
74/75 5th Grade teacher; Barrett (great black teacher who lived on 32rd Pkwy... she really cared)
75/76 6th Grade teacher; Mr. Lehman

Stoddert
76-79 I probably didn't show up in the regular pictures as I remember not being very fond of them those days but I was very active in chorus and took shop in 76/77 for 7th grade and French in 78/79 for 9th grade.

Potomac
79/80 I think I liked pictures a lot more that year, but not school... I may not show up in the regular lineup but I was in gymnastics and of course chorus again. I seem to remember having an argument with my mother to buy the yearbook so maybe I am in it.

I don't remember a lot of names, I felt a bit faded in the background of my cousins (the Adams boys) who I lived with through I think all of my single digit years. They and their mother (my Aunt) were VERY popular and we lived right across from the A&P and Pizza Pan on Iverson St.

There's probably a bunch of you that knew my cousins (Ron, Rod & Kirk Adams), their Mom Lois who ran the teen club and my Uncles and Aunt who lived next door Bob, Tommy, Laura and Steve Vider... to you guys I was probably the young little girl who annoyed you lol
Not to say I have a complex, a lot of you guys were nice to me but I know how the younger siblings can be :-)

I had some pictures of me through the teen club with my cousin Cheryl, I think maybe they took us as a kinda mascot. I remember what was probably the Valentine's Day dances where they would crown a couple of girls. I have faint memories of these pictures my cousin and I were probably 6-8 years old in our red dresses and white tights and the crowned girls we very beautiful. If any of you guys have pictures of some quirky little girls at the teen club, it's probably me and my cousin Cheryl. I would love to get a copy if you could email I can't even tell you how wonderful that would be!

I think those are really my favorite memories even though they are probably more you guys' through a younger person's eyes. I went on to study music when I moved to California when I was 22 and I impressed many with my musical taste. I have to thank the Adams boys, my Aunt Lois and my Unles and Aunt next door for that. Probably mostly my cousins Kirk & Rod and Steve Vider.

I remember a purple mushroom stool my Aunt Laura had and I'm pretty certain that she got it from Suni's but I wouldn't had remembered that or even thought of it before reading the post on here! I actually talked her out of that stool when I was in my teenage years, but alas that was also part of the theft. Got to love ebay for some of our beloved childhood memories.

My mom, Louise Harding was family friends with the school secretary Pam Barkanic and I'd often hide out in her office instead of wherever I should have been.
We would go out to Ocean City together and boy, that place has changed! I had sweet memories of perverted italians (and other guys) there, ok... so it was a bit of a homey place but that was the charm of it. Now it looks like someone's trying to make it into Miami... bleck!

We used to bowl duckpin on some leagues with the Grits hanging around.
I thought it really odd, yet VERY cool that my grandmother Pat Vider knew all the young cute boys, a couple of 15ish year olds showed up as I was getting my ears pierced for my 11th birthday and chatted with my grandmother. Thankfully for them there I had the nerve to go through with getting my ears pierced and not crying in front of the cute boys!
She worked at Murphy's when I was really young and would walk all over town which seemed like everyday. Go Grandma!

I played what seemed like every kinda sport there was for girls on the Silver Hill boys & girls club. My mom (Louise Harding) even coached a few. I'm not sure if it was a constant thing but I was a cheerleader for the club as well.

A few names I do remember,
Joanie Jordan
Inez
Debbie who lived on 23rd Pkwy
Sujata Sarin, who came around in Elementary and rescued me from my every-day mother's-made PB&J's... oh the gift of Indian food! She eventually realized PB&J wasn't so great everyday :-(
Vickie (I think) she lived over on Beumont or Akron St's. Fun red head, I really liked her and have no idea how we lost touch.
Perry Gaylord and his family lived at the same apartments on 23rd Pkwy
Phyllis Prather, I remember her at a childhood birthday party and saw her picture recently on the yahoo group Potomac class of 82'.
John Salmon, from Stoddert

I'm very much a visual person and perhaps if I saw picture all the memories would come flooding back to me. I wish I could remember more names and I apologize for whoever I might have missed that remembers me. Please feel free to knock me on the arm (but if you could email a picture first that would be a big help! :-) )

I used to skip school at Potomac and go hang out at John Hansen where my best friend (a year younger) was still going. Her name was Karen Jacobs (she had an older sister with Red hair who's name escapes me). I had moved over to Rosecroft Gardens in Jan 79' (which was later changed to Rosecroft Mews). We would hang out at the Tucker Road Ice Rink with the Greer sisters, Sharon and Susan (who I've also lost touch with) They lived off of Bock Rd I think. Karen and I got kicked out of the ice rink once, we got caught drinking in the bathroom and when we came out there was a crowd gathered in lines on each side of our path guiding us out the door and they were all clapping. We were embarrassed and felt like celebrities all at the same time. Apparently we were more "known" than we knew.

We would walk or hitchhike up Brinkley Rd in the snow to hang out on top of the hill and sled down on whatever we could attach ourselves to!

Obviously some of these memories aren't the makings of good examples to our children but I look at children walking to school these days and it worries me, it's not like when we walked to school. Were we really that safe or was that a naive memory?

Anyway, hats off to the master of this awesome website and you guys for igniting wonderful childhood memories!

P.S. GRITS! I did not know that this was not a universal thing! I remember hitting 4th grade or so and the razzing I took for not wearing Chucks! I was so NOT COOL! lol

Buying 5 cent candy at Murphy's and my first Beatles and Jackson 5 singles at Woolworth

Comments:

My best memories were from my first job at Dunkin Donuts with Mr. Watson. Remember his upside down backwards clock? He would always tell people who were reading to "Get out of here, does this look like the library?" Speaking of the library, I remember when the Hillcrest library was in a store front in the Hillcrest Shopping Center. I have seen a few mentions of Steak ina Sack. I still go by there sometimes and eat with my dad. I used to work there with Zackie Kalid (God rest his soul.) We used to buy our Christmas tree at Arcadian Garden. And Red Barn was our favorite place for a rare family dinner out. Although I didn't attend Stoddart, my best friend ever Maria Jones did. I would go there and hang out with her when my school wasn't in session. It makes me happy when I see the old landmarks when I visit my folks, but then I miss the ones that are gone forever.

I have not been in the Marlow Heights area for over 40 years. I really do not remember much about it, other than my Mom worked at the Hecht Company. My Dad was co-owner of Blue Bird Cabs in Marlow Heights. I just moved back to Maryland 8 years ago, have not lived here since 1970, than I was only here when I came home to visit. I would love to see people from Suitland, but cannot do the drive to Virginia or Marlow Heights, would love to have a get together on here across the Bay Bridge.

Any of you out there? Feel free to email me to catch up.

Thanks Chuck for the great site.

I believe I was one of the first to sign the guest book back in 2005. Glad to see the site is growing and so many people are responding.Chuck has done a great job keeping it all together and putting forth the effort to make the site grow and to organize events. Wish I had more time to contribute or participate. I thought I would retire in two years but with the turnaround in the economy and IRA's and investments having all gone south, it is beginning to look like retirement is a myth. I keep checking back every month or so hoping to find out about people I haven't heard from or seen for many years.

Comments:

Reading through the guest book brings back many fond (and some embarrassing) memories. I especially value the time I spent during Junior High School at Stoddert as part of the singing group, Peppermint Pipers. I would like to thank and honor Mrs. Jean McHale for her investment in each of us. I know that many of us were positively affected by her encouragement and example. I also have many fond memories of my friends during this time - especially Rhea Sweeney, who I knew from 2nd grade through high school. If anyone knows where Rhea is, I would like to hear from her. Does anyone know where Alan Tabor (Potomac class of 73) is? How about Cindy Sampson (also Potomas Class of 73)?

Freedom are kids don't have

Comments:

I actually grew up in Glassmanor in Oxon Hill, but my dad had the TV shop "Crest TV" next to Murphys in the Hillcrest Hgt. shopping center. He would load a bunch of kids from the neighborhood into his delivery van on Sundays and take us to his store to watch Walt Disney in color!!! If you walked by on a Sunday there would be a bunch of little kids with snacks sitting watching TV. My great granddad often played Santa for the center. My cousin lived on Beaumont St. in Marlow Hgts. and went to Sandy Mount, we spent many a Saturday wandering Marlow Hgts. It's so great to see your website because as my sister and I try to explain to my kids it was an experience few kids had. We grew up in such a unique and interesting area. My grandfather came up with the idea of how to make the suspended staircase outside of Hechts, he won an award for it. Back then they were an innovation. He was a coal miner turned steel worker from PA that migrated to DC during the depression. We could see the fireworks from the monument from our front porch and watched DC burn during the riots. My dad made us lay down in his delivery van and took us to VA to our grandmas as they were threatening to come up our street. We all went to Steak in the Sack and it was the place to go after a night out. I remember walking to Marlow Hgts bowling alley and my aunt telling us not to go near Dallas Kitchen as it was a rough crowd in there. Food at the lunch counter of Murphy's or Woolworth's was fantastic and real food not frozen crap. I too loved the colored chickens at Murphy's at Easter. Do any of you girls remember Evening in Paris perfume in the dark blue bottle? I wish my children could of had the childhood we had, we were so free. Great site, please update me with any reunions.

Chuck, You're doin a great job!!! Does anyone know what happened to Katie Henderson from Taney and Crossland '67? This was a great area to grow up in, the bowling alley, 7-11, Western Auto, Woolworth's cherry cokes the Hobby Shop, the barber shop. Anybody remember the trailer with Santa Claus in it in front of Woolworths? How about riding in the grocery carts from Giant??? It's a wonder we didn't break our necks! Fun times and I sure do miss them....Bobby Kendall

grew up there from 1955 to 1980 on west Kenton Place... one of the original homes. lots of memories, good and bad, as it changed from horse woodlands to suburbs to the edge of the gang wave... I remember the carnivals that camped in the MH shopping center parking lot; the Western Auto where I worked on my bike in front of it; watching all the woods disappear as the are was built up

Chuck
Thank you for doing such a great job on this website and the pictures from Steak n Sack bring back memories of all the times I ate there.
Also the pictures from Sandymount Elementary - refreshed my memories of what the school looked like. I also had Mr Yates, Mr. Rich and Mrs. Doyle as teachers and loved each and every one of them. Will never forget them. It is great to see pictures of Mrs. Doyle.
And the Peppermint Pipers - wow - I still have their album. Wanted to be one so bad, but then they disbanded and that was the end of that dream.
Thanks again for the walk down memory lane and - best of all - memories I have never forgotten.

I just posted last night. But, my memory was a little fuzzy. I met my first girlfriend Debbie Husband in WoolWorths, not Murphys. She gave me my first kiss in front of the stock room door. To the left of the fish tanks. I turned around and walked right into a pole! Just like in the movies. She sniggled and blushed. I was so embarrased. But, she thought that it was so cute. Thank God... Also, I spelled Stanley Iersons' last name wrong.
Sorry Stanley. Your still da man! Even after all these years. I continue to dress about the same. Except, I dont roll my pants up and I keep my chain in my pocket. Black Chucks, black strings, and black jeans. When I put my hair in a pony tail. People still say that I look just like Bowser!

Somebody said that "You can never go home".
But, Nobody said that you cant take a part of it with you!

What are some of your best memories of growing up in the area?:

Being a Grit and a Redneck (Greaser).

Comments:

I have a lot of fond memories living behind Iverson Mall on 28th and 25th ave. It was during the early to mid seventies. Some of the kids at Holy Family were very cruel to me.
Because of my last name (Grist). So, I changed it to Montgomery and moved away. My best memories were having schoolboy crushes on Suzanne Tillman, Katy Mattingly, and Tina Smith.
They were all so cute in those schoolgirl uniforms! My first real girlfriend was Debbie Husband. Who worked at Murphy's. She was 18 and I passed for 16. But, was really 14!
Quite an acomplishment back then. She looked just like Stevie Nicks did at that time. I remember going in Murphy's to buy some yo-yo string and leaving with an 18 year old girlfriend! WoW! That's something you never forget. We used to go to the Waldorf Drive-In on the weekends. I remember Me and Mike Ingram sneaking up on the girls who were sitting in his 1966 Galaxie convertable. While they were watching "It's Alive". The girls were so startled that they wet themselves and we had to take them home. Really funny at the time. You had to be there. Debbie soon moved to Virginia Beach. Then I met Teri Hanson. We were both 15 and were both born on August 31 1961. She was and still is the one true love of my life. Too bad I did'nt realize that at the time. I still look for her now and then. But, I can't seem to find her. Anybody Know? We traveled from Mall to Mall. Trying out for a part in the upcoming movie "Grease". And would have got second place! But, the contest was fixed. So, me and some Grit friends of mine tried to... Let me put this as gently as possible. Ruin it for everyone involved. If you know Grits. Then you know what I mean. Teri, if your out there my # is 434-656-8319. I also had a girlfriend named Mary Kidwell. But, Im not sure if that's her last name. Sorry Mary. I went to my first "KISS" concert with her. And she helped me into the 1970's. Thanks Mary. Before that all that I listened to was 50's stuff. My best friends were: Alan Waters, Mike Trefry, Danny Stancil, Bobby Nolan, John Sparrow, and last, but surely not least. The "Great" Stanley Irerson (My Role Model). We all grew up in Iverson Mall. And also hung out at the Carnival in Marlow Heights Shopping Center. I still haunt these places in my dreams. And hope my soul ends up there when I die... (circa 1970's)

Oh my God! Oxon Run Shopping Center. We lived on Afton Street the very last house on the left. Farmer Stamp's property was right there and so were his cows. I remember running through his fields chasing butterflies and lightning bugs in a jar. There was a tree that had fallen over a small brook and I use to go sit there. I remember Art Linkletters Tot and Dance Studio and having to take ballet lessons. I won my first trophy there and was so excited that I jumped off the bus that would pick me up ran down a hill, fell and broke off it's head!!!! I remember Mary behind the counter at Highs. I remember the grouchy ole guy at the Barber shop. Fortune cookies at the Chinese restaurant. I remember Murphy's and sitting at the counter and ordering chocolate cokes. I remember their popcorn balls wrapped in rainbow plastic. I remember they use to dye little baby chics for Easter!! They were blue, pink, green and you could actually buy these cute little things. I remember borrowing a horse (?) with a friend and riding it to the back of the shopping center! We got it home safely and no one ever got into trouble. As I got older I sold tye dyed t-shirts and necklaces to the Spiders Web and to the Float and Smoke on St. Barnabas Rd. I remember Adele Habib and her sisters and parents. I would go to their home and they would make grape leaves stuffed with rice and chicken. I remember the Goatman in Brandywine and driving around late at night waiting for him to come out of the woods. I remember Hillcrest Heights Baptist Church and having to sit in the back of the church with my Aunt because I was so squirmy. I remember staying out past ten o clock and feeling safe. My grandmother worked in the cafeteria at Montgomery Wards and would sneak us french fries. I have been so tempted to go back to some of the neighborhoods but that isn't wise. I would love to see Green Valley Elementary School. I hope to hear from some people that I knew. My memory isn't as sharp so I may have a hard time remembering you but I will try. This is a neat sight.

I LOVED your section on "So what is a Grit". I was histerical!!! Blocks and Grits. I remember EVERYTHING about that!! My brother was a grit for about 2 weeks and had enough of it. I was trying to explain it to some folks up here and they totally didn't get it.

I remember Mighty Mo's and the Teen Twist was my favorite. My mother and I shopped at Iverson Mall (Suni's and Bada's Petites, thank you) and of course, the Hect Co., Hahn's Shoes and always lunch at Hot Shoppe's cafeteria. Those really were gentler days. In Distric Height, my brother's were in the Boys Club, parades every 4th of July on Kippling Parkway, fireworks at the Municiple Center and we did many plays at the District Heights Theater of the Arts (also at the Municiple Center).

WPGC and teen splashes at Gateway Pool, wiffleball on the side streets, riding bikes to KayCee Drugs for penny candy and wax lips....

Thanks for the memories...great site.

This is so incredible! I lived on Iverson Street and attended Hillcrest Heights Elementary School in 1958. Then, we moved to District Heights where I attended Mt. Calvary. I graduated from La Reine High School in 1965 -- second graduating class! I was always in Marlow Heights at movies! Back then, it was safe to walk anywhere!

Once in District Heights, I joined the District Heights Theatre of the Arts and was in a lot of plays there: Peter Pan, Carnival, Carousel, Hello Dolly, to name a few. I've been blessed to be able to keep up with most of my theatre buddies, although many have passed away...

I still write to my French Teacher, Sr. David, from La Reine so I can keep up with the good Sisters!

Thanks, Chuck, for making this website possible! I can't wait to see who I might hear from!

Wow! Thanks to everyone for all of the memories you have given me! I still miss Pizza Pan Pizzas.....$4 bucks for a large and still the best of my life. I saw an old post from Skeeter Cato and tried his e-mail to no avail. We played baseball together, he and many others I am missing. Potomac and all of the parties from SE to Clinton to Ft. Washington were incredible. I have a 12 year old son and we do pretty well together. If any of you all remember me, please write me at zzcreamm@yahoo.com and I promise to respond. Peace and Love To All! zz- out!

P.S. Thank You for starting this!

Nice being so close to DC. Could hitchhike in and protest the Vietnam war. (It was a safe time and place to live) Skipping school meant Smithsonian Museums and Washington Cathedral. Hot Shoppes was the place to hang out with friends and meet new ones. Iverson Mall was awesome at the time. Lots of good friends surviving one of the touhest times in our history, generation gap, pigs, pushers, narcs, protesting Vietnam. Loved & lost Hendrix, Joplin, Jim. "Make love not war" peace brother, groovy. WOW. Good times... Didn't actually get to graduate with my Potomas HS class, instead it was Crossland Evening HS, had a baby. Anyone who remembers me, love to hear from you...

Hello,
I found your website by accident. I have been trying to search for Barber Shops that might have been in the P.G. County area around 1957.
I am not sure what area, though. I am trying to find my father who would be 78. He was part owner of a Barber Shop. His name is William. I don't know his last name. If anyone would know of any resources that may help me on my search that would be great.

Thanks,
Kim
what a great site!

Comments:

Hiya, I was a USAF brat and we moved from Baltimore to DC as my dad was stationed at the new Air Research & Development Command at Andrews. Until I was 14, most time was spent at Andrews sub-teen and teen club (anyone else take dancing from Mr. Pallimore and know what triple time is?) and the pool in summer.

We lived in Fleishmann's Village from 1960, before that were on Keating Street in Hillcrest Heights. I remember going to the end of Keating Street and the "big woods" with other kids that got engulfed when Iverson Mall was eventually built. No one worried about playing away from their front or back yards in those days. I'd ride my bicycle from age 10 from Keating Street down to my piano teacher (Mary Withers) every week. The best bit was cycling home with a crispy pizza from the Pizza Pan in the Hillcrest Heights shopping center...the "poor relation" to the new Marlow Heights centre.

I wanted to go to the new Sandymount, but my parents put me in St. Francis Xavier near Annacostia as Holy Family school was a grade behind me in adding classes. We rode these horrid old rundown WM&A buses that were rented by the parish along with the Holy Comforter (Kentucky Ave NE) kids but had the nicest drivers who would take us an extra bit further nearer to someones house if it was raining instead of just dumping us at the regular stop. We were mercifully allowed to sing in the back of the bus. The Shirelles, Ronettes, Motown ruled!

In Fleishmann's Village we had a lot of woods to play in as well as the old Fleishmann farm buildings which were sort of still there until cleared for building Carriage Hill which backed right up to our house. We played war games with the boys jumping out of trees and dared each other to climb the silo of the old barn abandoned by GLY contruction company. I now shudder to think about it...it was so unsafe. Before Kennedy and the helicopter, Eisenhower used to be driven from Andrews to DC on Suitland Parkway which ran right below the old farm. We'd hear on the radio that the president had just landed at Andrews. If we hurried, us kids could run through the woods, down the old dirt road to "Military Hill" (the embankment about the parkway). If we had enough time, we'd scramble/roll down the hill to stand by the parkway to wave. There was always secret service about in the bushes (not very well hidden!) and they'd laugh at us crazy girls. Once Carriage Hill was built we hung out at the pool in summer. I read someone say they learned to drive in the upper carpark at the GEM store....didn't everybody?

I remember WPGC and met "Tiger Bob Raleigh" with my friends at the station for a school project. A couple of months later my parents and I stood waiting in the cold for 8 hours to pass by President Kennedy's casket in the Capitol building, when I saw him again outside having a cigarette ...he was in tears.

La Reine really was a pretty cool school. In my senior year I used to go with a Crossland boy and remember sitting in his 64 Ford Falcon with a 289 and a reverse hood scoop (it was dark blue) in the back row of the Jr Hot Shoppes (the elite place to be seen). Wow, all those muscle cars...the sounds, the scent of Castrol is still with me! Lots of guys worked on cars, I wonder today if kids even know where the dipstick is? Thanks to him I do know where my dipstick is ;) Hay, does anyone remember Father Brogan at Holy Family who was given a GTO?

Went to the old Washington School for Secretaries in the Nat Press Building and was caught in the DC Riots of 68. I walked 30 blocks to upper Georgetown to see if a friend could drive me home, but he'd gone. Hiked all the way back and then over to L'Enfant Plaza to COMSAT to see if any of my dad's friends could take me(dad was away. Eventually someone there took me home to his family in Potomac. When I took my heels off (we had to wear heels, hats and gloves at WSS) my toes were all bloody from walking so much. It was strange to see the National Guard were on every street corner for months afterwards all the way out to Friendship Heights, but it never stopped me from going to The Hayloft or Rands when I was feeling "Blockish" (Phil Flowers amazing version of MacArthur Park is still in my head). Other years I'd have been at the Crazy Horse, Old Macs or New and the Cellar Door in my hip-hugger flares. Was Someplace Else the SE club with the black lights and everyone wore white tee shirts? Moving on to Ventuno 21 was a mistake....too much lip gloss and and leisure suits.

I moved north to New Hampshire (dad's home state) in 77 after having lived in Bethesda quite a while. I feel lucky to have lived where I did when I did. It was a very innocent age of drive-ins, fake-ids, cheap pitchers of beer, wine-coolers, school, church or VFW dances, proms, muscle cars and min-skirts. Today's kids seem to prefer massive limos to their proms, weekends in posh hotels and designer dresses and designer cocktails. Hello....after our senior prom at the Sheraton (I think) in a very modest high neck gown, we changed out of our formal wear and piled in cars and drove to OC to spend the night on the beach partying in cutoffs and bikinis on blankets. Something tells me that they'd never get the creepy cheap thrill from a midnight cruise down Tucker Road looking for the goat man! And, erm...what are they going to do when they are in their 50s-60s for oldies? As my parents couldn't picture a golden age of rock and roll (anymore than their's envisioned the golden age of swing)...WTF are they going to do with rap, hip-hop or bass & drums???!!!

Since 2000 I've lived in the UK with my British husband. We were in NH for many years before, but he was missing his family so we moved back and are truly settled here for good.

Oh, how did I come to your site? I was looking for Lebanese spices, etc. I had got the urge for a Steak In A Sack and thought I might find the recipe. No luck, but I see Steak In A Sack is still an institution.

Cheers for a great site, Chuck, and wonderful memories eveyone.

What's the word? Thunderbird. What's the price? Twenty twice!

What happened to Potomac's class of 1975?! I was looking forward to a 30 year reunion and never heard any thing or saw any thing posted. It would be great to see old friends again.
