VR 8 was my First duty station after YN"A" School. Changed to PN after graduating from school. I can remember looking out the Personnel Office window in the hangar and watch this BIG Navy plane land in the water - was it the MARS?? This was before we moved to Hickam. Was one of the few that stayed at Hickam when the Squadron went to the Berlin Airlift. The service records stayed with me. Jumpin Joe Clifton was the CO. Was on the basketball team that won the Pacific Division basketball tournament, I think it was in 1949. My next duty station was on the Staff of Chief of Naval Air Technical Training in Millington. Tenn. Retired as a PNCS in 1969.

It's a fine surprise to find a place remembering the Navy in MATS. Ours was a little-known corner of the Military that nevertheless covered the world, did it's job very well, and gave me the most valuable and memorable experiences of my flying career. The catch phrase was always, "This ain't the REAL Navy, Kid", and for that we thanked the stars we navigated by.

2 years at Moffett field, VR-5,51 to early 53.Loved the "whiskey gulch" hy 101, st jose to sanfran. 2 years at Atsugi NAS, VR-23, Tokyo in those days was a blast. Never dreamed the navy had such choice duty. Would do it again in a heart beat. God bless the Naval Air Transport Service.

I'm trying to locate a VR-7 Det-A Navy troop that I had as a friend in 1963. We traveled around the Tokyo-Yokohama-Yokosuka area extensively by train and by motorcycle. His name was C. A. (red) Chapman. I never knew what C. A. meant but the "Red" referred to his hair color. I believe that he may have made PO2 prior to leaving Tachikawa.

Arrived in squadron spring of '51 from AE school in Memphis, Tn. I couldn't work in hangar so they stuck me in the personnel office where I met Chief Womack who was the Flight Orderly chief and he asked me if i would like to go flying. So from about three weeks into the squadron I was on my way to Germany. It was so nice, having two lockers. One regulation and one civilian. Keep booze and liberty clothes in civilian locker. Captain Badger was the skipper for most of my time and then we got Captain Conrad the last few months. Badger was a great skipper and Conrad was an ass. The sport teams were the VR-6 Badgers.... but when Conrad came on board.. the Badgers were history. I enjoyed flying except the flights to Thule..... I've been to the last two reunions but may miss this coming one.

Best duty ever and it seems like yesterday. Good memories always last. Spent next year at NAS Quonset Point in VS-32 with S2F's. Made 3 cruises on 2 carriers in 11 months, all nites on flite deck. THAT WAS EXCITING!!Then 9 years as civilian employee of USN at O & R at QP. After that 30 years with the airlines in So. Fla. Eastern, Carnival, Pan Am.

Enjoyed both tours in MATS. The Air Force sure operates different than the Navy Airdales though. I have attended most, but not all of the reunions and and have not regretted attending wherever it was held. I have met many shipmates that I did not know before, but over the years it is like I had known them all my life.
I would also like to thank Red Umpress for his devotion to keeping the reunion records an also his assistance to those individuals who host the reunions in the different cities. If you are not a member contact Red, sign up with him, and join us at the next reunion.

I logged into VR-8 in August 1949 fresh out of AD "A" school. Went to Johnston Island for
6 months tour. Back to Hickam AFB, Worked in nose docks on engine position 2. Worked as
a flight orderly starting in June 1950. Was great duty at Hickam. Went to NAS Hutchinson,
Ks in 1952, then to VR-21 at NAS Barbers Point in late 1954. Worked on the flight line there and flew as FM until receiving orders to report to the USS Lexington (CVA-16) for
duty. Shipboard duty was not for me. Took a discharge in late 1957 and went into the USAF
and retired in late 1968. Hello to anyone out there I may have known.

The better half and I have been to all but the first three reunions, we have enjoyed eaach and every one. Mostly because we enjoy seeing old Navy friends and sometimes meeting new ones who have just joined. Monte had kept this together and has done a hell of a job listening to all of the griping and bitching from the sailors. Stud keeps the web site going and it is all volunteered and doing and outstanding job. I have also come in contact with sailors that I had done duty with before and they were with Mats prior to my duty tourand slso made many friends of people we met at these reunions. I guess it doesn't matter who we are but in the end we are NAVYMATSVR'S
