Here is a salute to the finest group of men I have ever worked with. Making it happen, with sometimes little support. David Ely, Dennis Mc Grath, Joe Maxwell (we flew GTMO together), Larry Kitts and Bud Motgomery I am glad you are alive and still kicking!

I flew VR on active duty for 4 years and then went to NAS Willow Grove for 16 more.Flew for UAL for 33 years (thanks to VR) The entire time was spent on the C-118.
Argentia (cargo) Harmon (pax), Azores, Port Lauety, Naples. GTMO and Rosy Roads. Taking Santa to the Island of YAP and greeted by topless ladies with lays, Christ Church NZ via every island imaginable. I am having lunch with Herb Montgomery on Monday to catch up on you all. We live in SAn Diego, NJ (summer), and New Zealand North Island for the Winter months. jaripper@hotmail.com gets me in all 3 places. Long live the memories of VR !

I was sent to VP-22 after AE school in Jacksonville. Looking back I learned alot and enjoyed my time with VP-22. I don't remenber the acft. number but we lost our sister ship in late 60 or early 61 on its way back from Moracco. If anyone knows what happened I would appreciate your input.

I'm the son-in-law of Charles (Chuck) Getman. He served as a loadmaster in VR-8 or 9 at Patuxent River in 1943-45. I'd appreciate any info regarding Chuck. He wife, Connie, was a WAVE at Pax during the same time frame. Their daughter and I are both retired Navy CDR's.

I was sent to VR-6 from boot camp at Great Lakes in October, 1951 (the month Mazeroski hit the "shot heard round the world"). I had qualified for air controlman school and hoped to be sent there, but something happened to my dental records and Westover Air Force Base became my billet until 1954 when I was sent to "shore duty" at NAS Cecil Field, Florida. (I went TAD from Westover to AC school in Olathe, Kansas, in 1953.) Westover memories abound. Among them: My first airplane ride (an an R5D on a search and rescue hop over the Atlantic right after I got there; the filthiest job I've ever had (wiping engine oil slicks from R5D bellies, wings and nacelles with kerosine rags and living with the odor for the entire stint); several turnaround R-5 and R-6 hops to Rhine-Main via the Azores, Prestwick and Keflavik as a temporary flight crew member, and a bunch of good friends.

My time at Moffett Field with VR-8 has been the highlight of my life, except for my wife and son. I still have very fond memories of many places, events, and shipmates that I encountered there. Unfortunately most of them are only memories, but through this website and the efforts of all the people responsible I hope to establish contact with some of the folks that served during those times.

I tended bar at the Cottage with a guy that I will never forget, Bill 'Yogi' Maier. I also won several dollars, and drinks, by jumping flat-footed up on the bar and B.J. Thomas had a few side bets on me.

I was from Hopkinsville, KY which was only fifteen miles from Ft. Campbell and I made most of the training TDYs there. My mom fixed hangover breakfasts for more than a few red-eyed airdales. Dad also went bar hopping with several drunken sailors, some of which would spend the night at our home.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone of the NavyMats Veterans

Gentlemen, I presently work for the US Government at US Naval Magazine Lualualei, Hawaii. My occupation is Physical Security/Federal Law Enforcement for the US NAVY. That, I have been doing for about twenty years now. I know the NAVY very well from my previous twenty years I spent with the NAVY on the fleet side with Fleet MArine Force or combat striking arm of the NAVY. I retired a Gunnery Sergeant and was very proud to have been with the USN those years.
While, I have been assigned at Lualualei from Peearl Harbor since 1991. I took interest in an old crash site just outside Lualualei on the side of a mountain called PaliKea. One of VR3's aircraft impacted it early in the morning of March 22,1955 at 0216 am. All personnel on-board were killed. Sixty Six people lost there lives. The debree field is still noticable but, remains like a forgotten thing of the past to todays generation.
For respect to the aircrew and passengers on that aircraft with a lot of research involved. They all have been posted on the Fine a Grave web site. The cemeteries noted are Jefferson Barracks Cem. in Missouri, Zachary Taylor National Cem. in Kentucky, Fort Bliss National Cem. in Texas, and one of the crewman at Deer Creek Cem. in Indfiana.
To pick on your knowledge and rememberance now. If, anyone should posses photographs of the following personnel. Please, E-Mail them to me for inclusion to the Fine a Grave site. They are: LtCdr Harold M. O'Leary, Lt. Lee Anthony Theroux, ADAN Gerald D. White, AN Charles Wayne Enloe, AN James Brice Quinn Jr, and AN William R. Rimer. Should, you visit the Find a Grave site. The pictures you noticed of some of the crew was taken from VR3's 1954 Squadron Year Book. Also, if you notice something on the individuals that may be wrong. Please, E-Mail me that I may correct it. One more thing, please. I need to know should anyone out there know. The birthdate of Airman Quinn Jr. I will even take a year. Thank you for your time guys. ALOHA, David L. Dunnavant

A great site. I was transfered from VR-24 to VR-6 arriving Jan. 1957 and stayed until Aug. 1959. I went to Guam from there. I think I recognized some names, but can't put faces to them. Must be old age! If I saw a "Ding-Dong" Bell there, Curley Miller will be familiar to you.

The best duty in the U.S. Service! Great time on trips as a youngster (19-21) but wished I'd taken more advice from those who went to the Taj Mahal, and other sites...rather than those who frequented the Bon Ton back home. The Connie was the best, it adorns the walls of my office and home. Now a Bonanza pilot with 4500+ hours, using it in my HR consulting business. Thanks to Doggie, Red, et al for providing this home.

I enjoyed my time with both squadrons. Couldn't make the grade as F/E but the training served me well. I left Moffett and went to AD(B) School, became an ADR when they split the Rate and then went to Hawaii with AEWBARRONPAC as F/E. Stayed in the Connie ( W//V) for 5,000 hours and loved every minute of it. Am now retired from NAS Corpus, and retired from everything else too. Ran into Chuck Horner at CAF Air Show in Midland and found this Website. Love it!!!
