Sent to Mcguire air force base TAD waiting for orders to air traffic control school.in 1962 and got involed with traing and maint. hops. I then was offered F.T.S. school in Oaklahoma. and I accepted. I sure got to see the world from the cockpit window of a R6D. I woud not trade my time in M.A.T.S for anything. Europe , all of U.S.A. south Pacific during the atomic test's .Went to Christ church New Zealand and several islands in between. My main plane commander was a old mustanger named Jim Beam. Made many a three engine landings but always made them .

Comments:

I went to NTTC, Memphis shortly after boot camp at Great Lakes for Aviation Electronic Tech training. Got assigned to VR6 at McGuire AFB, NJ in 1961 and worked on C-118 electronics for about 18 months. VR6 provided maintenence for VR3, which supplied flight crews for MATS. In 1963 VR6 was decommissioned and I transferred to VR3 and flew as a radioman mainly from McGuire to Europe/Africa on C118s and then C130s. Spent 3 months TDY flying the Pacific to SE Asia, specifically Vietnam. Jumped ship in late 1964 after my hitch was up and went to Penn State & Colorado State and got degrees in Electrical Engineering. I retired last year after working for Thiokol Corporation for 30 years making rockets for Shuttle, Trident, and commercial launch vheicles.

Might as well list in this new guestbook. From AE'A' school to VR-6 in '55 at McGuire. Two great years with great guys in the Elect. and Pressurization shops. Then onto VS-32 (S2F's) at NAS Quonset Point and in 11 months I did 3 cruises on 2 carriers ALL OF IT ON THE FLITE DECK, AT NITE!!! Discharged at QP and stayed on as Civil Service for 9 more years overhauling AD Skyraiders, A4 Skyhawks & A6 Intruders. Then 23 years in MIA with Eastern Airlines as an Avionics Instrument Mech. and Tech. Writer. When EAL folded I moved to Carnival Airlines and finally the resurrected Pan Am. By then I was Mgr. of B727 Scheduled Maintenence. One of my A/C was the team plane for the Miami Heat (NBA). Retired now living in beautiful wooded area of Palm Beach Co. 12 miles from the beach. Navy MATS was a definite hi-lite of my life.

My dad Joe Don Box who passed away in 1996 always kept me entertained with his stories of being in NATS and how much he loved to fly his beloved C-54. I remember dad said he flew from Hawaii to Guam and to Kwajelin,as well as some other places in the Pacific, If any of his crewmates see this or anyone who remebered him I would love to here from you!!

Served with NATS Squadrons in WWII before the merger with MATS. Had never seen a reference to the VR squadrons until I noticed the reunion of the VRMATS in the Legion magazine. Possibly a former member of VR Squadrons VR2,VR4 or VR12, years 43 to 46, might see this and Email me at cwww@cafes.net.

Comments:

After radio school at NATTC Memphis I was assigned to VR-8 at NAS Patuxent River, Md.
Served as aviation radioman on PBM flights to Bermuda, W.I., San Juan,Puerto Rico, Trinidad, B.W.I., Cayenne, Fr. Guiana (S.A.), Georgetown, British Guiana (S.A.), Belem, Brazil(S.A.), NAS Natal Brazil (S.A.) and Receife, Brazil (S.A.). We also served a multitude of Navy Blimp installations in the Caribbean and South America, landing any place that we could set a PBM down without hitting caribes, crocodiles, anacondas or rum distilleries. It was an adventure, when we could keep the engines running without siezing up due to oil leaks. It was the best Liberty Area in the world. The best Cerveza, Pan American Staff Houses to live in and eat in plus an absolute plethora of Rum Distilleries. Of course the senioritas were the most beautiful creatures God ever put on this earth. War was Hell !
In late 1944, I was reassigned to VRF-4 at NAS Floyd Bdennett Field in Brooklyn, N.Y.
We picked up, checked out and delivered PBM's all over hell and half of Georgia, from Baltimore, Norfolk to Banana River, Elizabeth City,Corpus Christi, Texas and NAS Alameda, CA. All Stateside until they shut down VR-8 and sent us to VR-2 in Alameda, flying the milk run to Honolulu, Johnson's Island, Majuro, Tanapag, Saipan and on to Sangley Point near Manila. After gthe war ended. were sent back ( I was) to
man the Radio Tech Shop at VR-1 at (you got it) god old NAS Pax River.
What goes around, comes around! Between Patuxent and reporting to the Pentagon, time elapsed quickly until discharge in 1946. I attended and graduated from the University of Toledo in 1950, married a Navy Nurse and proceeded to "begat" 3 fine off spring; One Chemical Engineer, One a Metallurgical Engineer (Masters in Ceramics) who worked at Los Alamos (She glows in the dark) and married a USAF Officer, from a B-52 Squadron....now Retired and One brainy daughter who just finished her Doctorate in Psychology. It must have been the Navy Chow.
At Patuxent, we had the finest

Comments:

I'm calling for all former VR-6 members to attend the 2005 Reunion in Gulfport and get re-aquainted with former shipmates. Westover was great duty, the personnel top notch, and the "clock" is ticking as there probably is not that much time left. In addition to myself, there are four other former VR-6ers from Westover that I know are planning to attend . . . Danny Daniels - Flight Crew, Jim LePage and Leo McGinley also from the Electrical shop, and Darrell Seegraves - Mechanic's Shop. We hope to see you there.

Arrived in VR-8 as an AT2 from VW-1 so I spent my entire 4-year career in connies. Worked in the shop for a while and then spent most of my time in flight line maint where I logged many hours playing acey ducey with the mechs and metal benders and launching numerous C-121s on their round the world flights. Great duty for a second class, no watches and a 4 days on, 2 days off work schedule. Fun liberty at all the watering holes in Mt. View and Sunnyvale with side trips to San Fran. I liked it so much I ended up working and living in Mt View and Sunnyvale for 10 years. Many fond memories of Moffett Field and Navy aviation in general.

In 1963, Plane Commander

Comments:

I arrived at Moffett Field in May of 1960. After orientation and groundschool, I went through a copilot's training course. Then out to the wide Pacific as a navigator/pilot until 1961. Then upgraded to copilot flying to Tachikawa, Clark AB, Bangkok, and had my first embassy run to Dharhan, Saudi Arabia. In 1963 I upgraded to Plane Commander and continued flying adding Kadena Okinawa and Saigon as regular stops as our efforts in Viet Nam increased. Then my time on active duty ended and I went to work for Pan Am at SFO flying as Flight Engineer and First Officer on 707s and then 747s all over the world. What a great life! I went over to United Airlines in 1986 as part of the Pacific Route Sale and then flew 757s and 747s until I retired in 1998. Those 3.5 years at VR-7 shaped my life flying for the airlines 32 years!

The following is taken from the home page about VR-8:
Estab. 09/01/43 - NAS Oakland, CA as VR-11
Moved 11/01/43 - NAF Honolulu as VR-8
Moved 11/48 - Templehof, Germany
Moved 10/49 - Hickam AFB, HI
Moved 09/21/57 - NAS Moffett Fld, CA
Disestablished 04/30/67 - NAS Moffett, CA

Here is what I remember about it: VR-8 moved from NAF Honolulu to Hickam AFB (my office was in the hangar which was close to Honolulu Airport and I remember looking out the window amd seeing the MARS land in the water) before the squadron went to Templehof. I stayed at Hickam and kept the service records and even did reenlistments from there. What I rememeber was that VR-8 stayed at Hickam and the unit that went to Templehof was known as VR-8 Detachment. The closest I ever got to a plane was they had a storm coming in and they turned all the planes to face the wind, and assigned me to sit in the plane and keep pumpkng the brakes - or whatever they were called.
