CAN ANYONE HELP OUT ON THESE VA QUESTIONS? CHECK YOUR LOG BOOKS TO SEE IF YOU HAVE DATES SHOWING VIET NAM GROUND TIME. I.E. LANDING AND LOCATION,TAKE-OFF AND LOCATION. NORMAL AREAS WE ENTERED AND DEPARTED WERE CAM RHAN BAY, TAN SON NHUT. WE WOULD NOT BE VERIFYING HIS ENTRY, BUT A LEAST THE FACT VR-7, VR-8 AND VR-22 PERSONNEL DID ENTER THESE AREAS. IF MY MEMORY SERVES ME RIGHT, WE HAD TO MAKE A MINIMUM OF 5 TRIPS INTO A CERTIFIED COMBAT ZONE (WHICH INCLUDED THE TWO SITES ABOVE), TO BE AWARDED THE VIETNAM SERVICE MEDAL. (OR WAS THAT A STAR ON THE VIETNAM RIBBON?)

Now I have a letter from Chief Gibbs that we Carried body bags on the aircraft in Nam

I need a statement certified and to the VA in three days they gave me 10 days I will be glade to pay the cost of over night and next day and any other cost

Comments:

This is for Mr. Murphy, interesting that you are asking about Vietnam and VR-7. Since my father Capt Edward W. Bergstrom retired as the CO of VR-7 in 1965 and passed away in 1967 he did not "get" either the Vietnam Service or the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. I have a request into the US Navy for these medals due to his service in VR-7 (and on the USS Salisbury Sound-AV-13). Luckilly I kept his log book for this period and identified three times he landed in Vietnam (He may have went other times as a passager). I also have his "Three Good Years" album that was given to him upon retirement that may also have some records in it. I do not know if this documentation will do any good for you since it does not name you. It does prove that VR-7 was in Vietnam though. Thanks Bob Bergstrom

I arrived at Hickam AFB on Oct. 31, 1955. I was assigned to the electronics shop which was located in one of the nose-docks on the back side od Hickam. Names I remember were Ray Christian, ATC - Howard Boshers, ATC - EW Horn, AT1 - Herman Frazier, ATC - Howard Boshers, ATC - Calvin Thompson, ATC - VR Marriott, ATC - Raymond Wilson, AT2 - James Millar, LtCdr - Bob Roberts, AT2 -

Those were the most memorable days of my Navy career. The rest of my time was spent in VP squadrons teaching ASW tactics. I wish that I could contact any of those with whom I served. I'm 69 now and I find myself reminiscing quite a bit. I remember moving the squadron back to Moffett Field in 1957. Those blimp hangers were just monsters. Again, my time in VR-7 was the best in my Navy years. Our oldest daughter was born there in 1958 in Redwood City. We lived in Mtn. View. Thank you for maintaining this wonderful site.

Does anyone know where we can locate records to prove we flew in country Viet Nam? The VA needs actual proof of boots on the ground to process and approve claims for Agent Orange. I have lost all records and log books 20+ years ago and the navy Department has not helped. Hopefully some one has solved the riddle and knows where to go.

I was a kiddie-cruiser, spent 3 1/2 years in NAVY, and last 1 1/2 at VR 22. Initially placed in charge of the electric shop (pending assigment to one of the plane crews), but spent a lot of time working for AM Chief Wilkes in Engine Build Up. Some shipmates were Cross, Ludwiczak, Muscarella, Cooper, DeNolfo. I drew flight skins most of my time in AR22 (stops in Naples, Morroco, Azores, etc). We usually utilized Air Force facilities at stops and layovers, but rarely used their techs for routine maintenance problems, which were usually delegated to us crew-members "to save time" (we only had one rating "jacks of all trades"). Enjoyed the Air Force housing and chow halls (who said the NAVY gets the gravy - apparently they never ate in an Air Force Mess Hall). In 1960 I participated in Air Lift Operation that was based in Puerto Rico; think we had 20 minute ground time target for each flight in order to hit the airlift targets that were established for the operation (we would alternate maintenance checks with refueling tasks on each incoming aircraft). I only recall Douglas R4Ds' and the loss of one aircraft and crew (occurred right after I left the squadron). Would like to hear from anyone in VR22, along with any info on future reunions.

First duty station after AD School.Worked for an AD Chief Ed Harmouth. Great guy that took the "kids" under his wing. Glad to have spent time in old Hawaii before it became the Coney Island of the Pacific. Like to hear from J C Mann, Bill Marks or Joe Donathan if they're still out there.
As usual a great job Studs.

I served two years in NATS/MATS from February '47 to February '49 on flight line, ship's equipment and flight log yeoman in Honolulu with an interruption of 9 months TDY on Kwajalein Island as 'weight & balance' yeoman. I have looked for reunion notices of VR-8 personnel in American Legion and VFW magazines but have never found any. Many fond memories remain of good service in "Paradise" and on the Equator (which was no form of 'paradise'). Unfortunately, TDY in Frankfort was missed by the non-sanction of one officer (XO) at John Rodgers Airfield. Time has dulled the names of most shipmates but the names of Ens. Ed Feifert (sp?)and his SNJ on Kwaj and Jim Parker in Honolulu remains. Would like to hear from any shipmates from that era of service that are still alive. Since I was only 17 when I enlisted, and since that was almost 60 years ago, most of the survivors of that time of service are probably dead by now or, at best, too weak to write anymore. Best contact is by E-Mail.

I know our members are disappointed at the cancelling of the 2005 reunion, but it just couldn't be helped. At short notice, it was so hard to contact all our members and notify them of any change, and for them to re-route any pre-purchased airfares plus trying to get a place suitable to members, it just was logistically impossible. The good news is that our planned host George Weeks is in good condition physically, but I know he must be mentally challenged on trying to relocate and get his affairs back in order. We all wish him the best, and hope he is settled and available for our reunion in 2005. For you members who read these messages but never log on, PLEASE DO! Our members are always happy to hear of past shipmates, their welfare and just to say hello. Don't be shy! Drop sign on to our ships log and let us hear from you.

This was my first squadron assignment after flight school. I spent most of my time on the Embassy Route (1958-1960). After leaving active duty I transferred back for a short time as a reserve pilot from Alameda, but that didn't last long as a Reservist did not get enough flight time to keep current in the aircraft, let alone advance in pilot qualifications.

Most of my time at Moffett was spent in navigation as a flight examiner checking flight packets or teaching refresher navigation courses.

For a while I was in a crew assigned to A/C 632. Some of the ones I worked with were Al Myers, J. P. Duncan, Dewey Owens, Dean Searle, Charlie Culbertson, Gerhardt, Jim Dunham (deceased), George Wixom (deceased), Doc Denton (deceased), Jim Stout, Denver Flannery, and Gene Ralston. That is all I can think of for now but if I overlooked you I still would like to hear from you. A great squadron, airplane and bunch of people I will never forget.
