Served in VR-3 at Moffett Field and transfered with the squadron to McGuire AFB in NJ in '57. Had a great time, flew with great people and enjoyed every minute of my time in VR-3. Had the opportunity to vist many countries in the western pacific and most of Europe before I was 21 years old.

GF Murphy
My father was the CO for VR-7 1962 to 1965. I have his log book that does show flights into Vietnam during this time. I do not see crew lists on the flights. I am sure either the National Archives (NARA) or the Naval Historical center would have any unit histories. I would also check with the Air Force since they were the head of MATS an may have some records. I know that if you were in a plane that flew within the territory of Vietnam you automatically qualify for the Vietnam Service Medal (or the Armed Forces Service medal). I have a request into the Navy Retired Records office in St Louis right now to get these medals for my father (it takes a year). I will keep this site posted to my progress. I will look thru my fathers things from that time to see if I can locate anything else.

Found the answer to my previous question but did not solve the problem with the VA. Under the Naval Avation Flight Records: Crew and Passanger Manifests, in the Department of the Navy-Naval Historical Center, "no records in the Navy Records System exist that will provide documentation listing flight manifests that are more than three months old." The fight with the VA continues!

Still looking for the key to solve the VA requirements for serving in country Viet Nam. I have sent every possable piece of information I can muster up including copies of cruise books medal awards etc. The VA wants actual proof such as flight orders. I give up! After 39 years does anyone know where one can find flight orders on Navy crews, flying Air Force aircraft, from a squadron that was decommissioned in 1967??? All help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Time for a few laughs. We can all laugh now about some of the crazy things that happened when we were "young and foolish".

We had an R6D in the engine stands one nite with people working on all 4. I was sitting in the cockpit when an AD striker sat in the seat next to me. They were going to do a compression check on #4 and they had the swing-away sections of the stand opened so the prop could spin. Someone yelled ok and the kid squeezed the starter and safety switches with his thumb and forefinger. Silence! Then he noticed the starter selector was in the OFF position. With his other hand he clicked the selector switch clockwise thru #1,#2,#3 and finally #4. Starters whined and all four props ticked over a few degrees followed by much yelling. Fortunately no one was hurt and not a blade touched a stand.
I'm not sure if it was famed aviation writer Ernest K. Gann or not but someone much wiser than me once said " If I have a choice between skill and luck, Ill take luck every time".

Hello, Looking for old buddie from VR 8, Richie Sieg. He came from St. Cloud, Minn. Together at Hickam and Guam.
I think he became an officer. Last I saw him he was driving a dead buddies Volks from Beeville,Tx. to someplace
in NJ or Penn. That was anound 1960. He then went back to VR 8 Hickam and the new Connies.

Anybody out there old enough to remember VR-6's days at Westover A.F.B.? It's an ARB now but the hangars and other permanent buildings make it look like the old days. We lived in left-over World War II barracks not far from the flight line. Two COs while I was there, Captains Konrad and Robertson. There was also a very senior Ensign who drove a 12-cylindar 30s-era Lincoln, name of Ware. I went TDY to AC School (in Olathe, Kansas) while I was in VR-6. The squadon was transitioning from R5Ds to R6s when I got back in early '53. They were both great airplanes. Some of the R5D cargo versions had traces of coal dust left over from the Berlin airlift.
