Comments:

The info on VR-7 states that it was restablished in November 1946. I was flown from Moffitt Field, California, to NAS Agana, Guam, on an R5D in July 1946. We had stops in Hawaii, Johnston, and Kwajalein Islands before our Guam touchdown. All of our buildings were quonset huts with plywood decks which were required to be oiled to deter the termites. The oiled decks and whites were not compatible. I was a YN3. One of my duties was Mast yeoman.

Served in FAWTUPAC at Barbers Point, Xfered to VR8 Hickam Field for a while then to NAS Agana Guam.Looking for Richard Sieg who I served with on Guam. He returned to VR8 in the early 1960s as a Warrant officer {I think}.Came from St Cloud Mn. He and EJ Hollenbeck and me were the three Swabbies that climbed down the ladder from General McArthurs' Connie named SCAP {Supreme Commander Allied Powers}when it arrived at NAS Agana' Guam from Japan around Christmas 1950. McArthur was not on the aircraft. We were told there was another generals body aboard being flown back to the states for burial. He was killed in Korea.

The book can be found by searching in the ABE books or Amazon website under the title "Aircraft of the Military Air Transport Service 1948-1966" I found it with no problem. On a side note, the last medal my father received upon retirement in July 1965 was the Air Force Commendation medal for the outstanding saftey record VR-7 had the three years he was the CO (I think they also gave the medal to the base commander Capt Bowker) I just recently had the Secretary of the navy award my father the Bronze Star decoration for his actions with VP-102 at the start of WW II. He was awarded it 65 years after the fact! I am now trying to get the Navy to award him the Navy Cross for his actions during the "Kiska Blitz" in the Aleutians, June 1942. Due to an error by the Wing secretary the recommendation letter was never sent to the awards branch. I am in the process of "convincing" the Secretary of the Navy to award it. It has not been smooth sailing so far with them.

I came to VR-8 at Hickam AFB in August 1955 from AT"A" School at NATTC Memphis. Great duty with some great people and many very fond memories. I stayed in the Navy and retired in 1974 as a LCdr. The Navy was very good to me and I wish I could live it all over again.

You Navy MATS folks might be interested in a book I had published in 1999, "Aircraft of the Military Air Transport Service 1948-1966", which gives the most thorough history of MATS - including the Navy's contributions - to appear in print. I also have included quite a few photographs of Navy MATS aircraft: R5Ds, R6Ds, R7Vs, C-130s, etc. The book is still available from Amazon.com and several other booksellers.

Two GREAT years in Hawaii, 1952-1954. A shame what progress has done to the islands. I still think Connie was a great airplane with or without leaking inter-cylinder drain lines. Would like to find John Mann, Joe Donathan and ME Miller.

Comments:

Just found this sight. Anyone remember Ltjg. Chuck Rose? Chuck was assigned as Nav instructor on the "Connie" flight that crashed in NAS Agana, Guam. The fuselage broke open over the seat he was strapped into and he and the seat were ejected through the opening. He tumbled down the mountainside, breaking a leg. Was that in 1962? I didn't see much of Chuck after that. Thirty some-odd years later I was a B767 Captain with Delta Airlines; there had been a severe hurricane that hit Fort Lauderdale, Fl. and I was told to "deadhead" there to fly the first flight out. As a courtesy, I went to the cockpit to introduce myself to the Captain flying us there. I don't remember names well, but noticed he was a stout, white-headed, friendly chap. A bit later his name came back to mind because something seemed familiar; it was Chuck Rose. We visited a lot that night. After leaving the Navy, Chuck had been hired by Western Airlines, which Delta later bought. I regret that Chuck passed away a short time later.
Regards to all of my old shipmates,
Bill Cantrell

My Grandfather was in VR-7 or 8 at both Hickam and Moffett, Frank Stapleton was his name, he passed away before I was born
I have many old photos from 47 on and was hoping someone may have some info on him or point me in the right direction as to where to obtain it. I believe he was a Super Connie(coincidentally, my Aunt's name) flight engineer but My mother's military knowledge is novice at best.I have somewhat accidently followed in his foot steps and this has become very important to me.

I would like to have any old old timers that have pictures of the VR-8 nose docks and barracks/area taken during the 49-52 time frame to please e-mail some to me. Thanks in advance. Also is there anyone out there that was on Johnston Island detachment from late 1949 to May 1950. The detachment commander was Ens. Rosenfeld and senior elisted man was Chief Goddard during my 6-months tour there. Anyone with info, shoot me an e-mail. Thanks, Milo MIles

'Just browsing--was checking on when Gen Curtis LeMay, SAC Commander, was touring MATS @ Hickam AFB, Hawaii, then decided to see if Mats was on the web. An AF flight nurse & I were chosen to be the hostesses to greet Gen LeMay aboard for a tour of the aircraft--she on the C97 & I on the R7V Super Constellation--thrill of a lifetime. As he departed the aircraft, he asked which I preferred flying in--but of course, my reply was "The Super Constellation, Sir!" He smiled. It was a memorable tour of duty.

Just wanted to make everyone aware that the Navy Expeditionary Medal is now approved by the CNO for service in Thailand from May 16 1962 to August 23 1962 and in Cuba January 3 1961 to October 23 1962. I am not sure if MATS was involved in these operations but seems to me you guys were probabaly there (I know my dad flew into Thailand many times when he was CO). Hope this info will be of use to someone.

VR3 spent 19 months out of 23 on graveyard shift check crew. Made AD3 while in squadron. I used to cruise the Santa Cruz mountains on my Harley.
VR8 spent last 19 months on swing shift pre flight crew. Made ADR1 in squadron thanks to the ground school on Power Plants I went through right after checking in to the squadron. I consider both tours as my most enjoyable tours and loved the Bay area back in those days.

I went to McGuire AFB just after they moved from Westover in 1955. I transferred from Mats to VP-44 in 1961. I retired in 1972 as a Senior Chief after 20 years. After retiring I was in the Real Estate business for 30 years. The last 20 years I had my own Real Estate Appraisal Co in Springfield, MO. We are about 45 miles north of Branson, MO which has several country shows as well as Navy Reunions.
