Golfed with Jack Hawkins today and he told me about the website. VR-7A was my first Navy squadron. I flew as FA/Loadmaster. I remember the flight to Bangkok with a jug and a sack of mail to rescue the plane that was down there for a jug change. Overflew SVN at Danang and drew combat pay for that month... I also remember the Misawa flights to bring the pregnant AF wives to Tachikawa for their checkups. Lot and lots of sicksacks. On a sad note, I heard that Bill Russey died in the P3/Convair 880 crash at Moffett some years ago. I think that Franz Schnieder was working tn ATC there at the time. I saw him at Adak several years later. I retired in '82 as an ATCS with lots of P3 hours.

Well I finally heard back from the Navy Retired Records Section in St. Louis. I received a Bronze Star medal for my fathers service in the Philippines at the start of WW II (yes that was 65 years ago!) At the same time they supplied a list of vendors who could supply the Vietnam Service medal. It seems that they do not supply that medal to dependents of deceased veterans. I do not know if they would award it to living veterans. All I know is that if you meet the criteria for the Vietnam Service medal then you can get it. Any veterans of VR-7 who flew to Vietnam are eligible for it and the Vietnam Campaign medal from the Vietnam government (South Vietnam). If you flew over Vietnam then you are eligble for both medals. You are also eligible for the Armed Forces Expeditionary medal if you were involved in some other conflits during that time (see the US Navy awards manual for which operations). Good luck.

Served from age 19-21...what an assignment! Fell in love with the R7-V (C-121G) named MATS 44048-MATS 44079. Over 2000 hours loading the old HF radio, keeping radio logs, learning code, typing per diem claims, and kicking the faulty electronic equipment to make it work...oops, gave away the twidget's main secret. Learned to appreciate the "crew work" that made everything fly right side up. Miss Yogi Bear who always told the passengers on a rainy take off that he wasn't sure we could get enough traction to take off...but we'd try. Remember a few takeoffs from Kwajalein when loaded where it seemed that only "V-2 Charley" (the Shark at the end of the short runway) would "have a nice day." So many memories and so many friends made--The Best Duty of Any Service in Any Time! Ding...(my signature to avoid being called "Dong") Now a 4500+ hour IFR-rated pilot in my own Bonanza.

I was an AD3 and worked for Chet Shafer on aircraft 828. He was an outstanding Chief and I was very fortunate to have been assigned to his crew. I was also an AD on a number of embassy flights and that was another wonderful experience. When my 4 year enlistment was up I tried to reenlist for another tour in VR 7 but was turned down.

My duty station was Barbers Point, HI in 1957 where I served in Airborne Early Warning Squadron 12 (VW-12). I was a student navigator assigned to VR-7 for my overwater navigation check flight after having completed the ground work with the Air Force. I flew from Hickam to Kwajalein to Guam to Manila to Wake Island and back to Hickam with VR-7. Upon return, I took up duties as Air Navigator flying out of Midway to Alaska and back, completing 3000 hours in the WV-2. I was fortunate to have flown with the best of the best, pilots who had flown the Berlin Airlift.

All,
Much to my sorrow, I must announce the death of our Reunion Chairman Monte Umphress' wife Anne. For those of you who don't know her, she was a much present person at our reunions for the 1st 10-15 years of our existence, and had attended several of our reunions since. She and Monte met while serving in VR-3. She was ex-Navy, a Flight Orderly and he, a Flight Engineer. We wish to pass our condolences to Monte on his loss, and mourn to passing of a fellow shipmate Wave.

I was from Hopkinsville, KY so I made all the training trips to Ft. Campbell, KY. Many good friends and fond memories were the results of those TDY missions. We even dropped a couple of my old high school buddies out the back of the Herks.

I completed a 34 year career in telecommunications and last February I bought an eighteen wheeler and am now seeing the country. I have also seen three old VR-8 buddies: Joe Carr, Steve Grantham, and Rudy Goree.

Would love to hear from anyone from the good old NAVY days.

A picture in the latest issue of mag. Airliners Illustrated shows an R6D parked in the weeds. It is at Pacific Coast Air Museum in Santa Rosa, CA. and still has Navy markings with BUNO 131594. If I am not mistaken, that was in VR-6 when I was, in '55 - '57. Can anyone confirm? We had several in that number sequence including of course 131588 which crashed enroute to Lages. Any of you live near there? Sure would be nice to see that A/C restored.

I would like to hear from John Dougherty, Bill Miller, or Vince Leitz if they are looking through these pages.
I served aboard a heavy guided missile cruiser, USS Canberra CAG-2 after my VR-3 service.
