My name is Bill Timmons and I am Tim's son. My dad died in 1984. I only have bits and pieces of his 26 year career. I THINK he was the flight engineer for the VR3 skipper 1953-54. I know we lived @ NAS PAX River 1947-49 and he participated in the Berlin AirLift. I know we moved with VR3 to Moffitt Field in 1949 (can you just imagine how HUGE Hanger #1 was to a young boy?)

I know he was transfered to Beeville, Tx, my mom refused to leave Sunnyvale, and he came home six months later after taking a pass on his final four to reach 30 years service. (-:

Does anyone have any memories of my dad they could share? My e-mail is mrhandcar@gmail.com. You may also telephone me COLLECT @ 916-688-1206.
He was proud of his career and I'd like to fill in the gaps.

Thanks!

Arrived as an AN; lucky to leave as an ATR3. Of course I only remember the good memories and have forgotten any of the bad (few and far between). Thankfully, I eventually cleaned up my act and retired on 30. My sincerest apologies to all the good people I succeeded in alienating.

Left VR-8 for NS San Diego (NESEP Prep School) and subsequently to University of Washington, Seattle. Graduated 1962, commissioned, and spent the rest of my Navy career in jobs related to destroyers and aircraft carriers. Retired CDR in 1980. The Navy was one of the best things I ever chose.

8/30/08 - Just noticed the MATS reunion in the summer Shift Colors Bulletin. Hope all will have a good time as I am unable to get there on such short notice.. Was with VR-3 from October 56 through October 58. Helped with the paperwork to get VR-3 moved to Mcguire. Wonderful squadron and have a lot of good memories. Especially being snowed in during the winter at Mcguire. I left the navy in 58 and re-enlisted later. Eventually became an RD1 on Admiral Thomas Moore's Seventh Fleet staff during Vietnam. Left active duty after 12 years to take a management position for a major telephone company, and later retired as an IC1 from the Naval Reserve. I remember Lt. Brzinski very well and still have a lot of admiration for him. As I said, hope all will have a good time. Les

Wow, I luckily found this site. How great it is! Didn't get in the R7V operations at Moffett, too busy flying WVs out of Guam. Transitioned into C130's at Travis, then flew 4+ yrs until decommissioning VR-7, then Shufelt and I surfed across the hangar to VR-22 'till they quit. Finished career at 20 in VP-9, Moffett. Starting with PB4Y2's in the Advanced Training Command and ending with P3's, I hung my tail-bone in the air for many hours.
Reading some comments brings back memories of times at Corpus Christi at O&R where we did the R5D overhauls.
Oh! those dirty coal hauling ***! But test flying afterward was sweet.
Regardless of prior and subsequent jobs, a Navy career holds the spotlight, even though more years were entailed in other pursuits. The friends and duties are lifelong cherished memories and can never be forgotten. I still have one more long flight to make, but I hope it won't be soon, at least 'till after September, '08.

I was stationed at Hickam and Guam. In December
1953 I was sent to NAS Guam (VR-8 detachment). While there I was taken to sick bay one night with chills and high fever (malaria). It was never recorded in medical records. Anyone kinowing of the incident is urgently requested to verify incident as a claim is depending upon it. I have been diagnosed with chronic lymphatic leukemia. Your response would be most helpful and deeply appreciated.

I am looking for anyone who served on Guam from December 1953 to May 1954. One night I was taken to the sick bay with chills and high fever (malaria). Does anyone out there know about the incident? Are there others who were exposed to ionizing radiation and suffer from cancer or leukemia? Your response is desperately needed to support a claim. Thank you.

Many of the entries only list the NUMBER of years they were in MATS. I think everyone should list the years (Example: 1955 -1957) they served. If they are the same years as our own, we can then search our rusty memory to see if we remember them.

I served in the final three years of Det Alpha's existance. Went thru the Navy's final Connie FE class at Tachikawa, which was instructed by some really fine engineers and shipmates, such as Shorty LeGault, Henry Chavous, Bill Decker and several others. I see a couple of names of log book guests here who managed to teach me few things about flying the best multi engine, recip plane in the Navy inventory. This was a great tour of duty and one that will stay with me forever.

I'm pleased to see the new website, very well organized and very responsive. I flew in VR-7 from Jan 58 through Dec 60, enjoyed nearly every minute. Was in Operation Big Slam and also was aboard the aircraft (44052?) which went into Johnston Island with 2 turning...both on same side during Christmas season 1959 with a plane load of VIPs going to Japan to do Christmas shopping. Spent several days in downtown Waikiki as payment for our efforts. Got really sick on Gin!
Would like to see a "master list" of those who have "set sail on their final voyage." I occasionally miss months...and would like to honor those I knew in my own way. Thank you. Good luck to all!

Corpus Cristi reminds me of sweating. (I thought Fla. was bad). Summer of '56 or '57 (?) I was on the crew to deliver one of our R6D's to the O & R at NAS Corpus and pick up one that had just been thru overhaul. We get in the overhauled one for an acceptance test flite and it must have had 120 deg. F Gulf of Mexico air in it and our gray haired VR-6 pilot takes off his pants and shirt and puts on a pair of old tattered khaki pants and sits in the left seat. No shirt and he has gray hair on his chest also and looks silly with his headphones on. We take off and we keep the outflow valves open to air it out until we get up to 10,000 ft. At the end of the flite its a hard landing back at NAS Corpus and the pilot gets a good ribbing from everyone. We park and when he gets up, the seat of his old pants are all red. Now someone jokes "That must have been a tougher landing than we thought." Our grizzled old Commander tells us they always put in new red dyed leather upholstry in the cockpit at overhaul and unlike me, it's not his first time at Corpus in August. I'm sure it will be much better in Nov.
