Comments:

Many of the entries only list the NUMBER of years they were in MATS. I think everyone should list the years (Example: 1955 -1957) they served. If they are the same years as our own, we can then search our rusty memory to see if we remember them.

I served in the final three years of Det Alpha's existance. Went thru the Navy's final Connie FE class at Tachikawa, which was instructed by some really fine engineers and shipmates, such as Shorty LeGault, Henry Chavous, Bill Decker and several others. I see a couple of names of log book guests here who managed to teach me few things about flying the best multi engine, recip plane in the Navy inventory. This was a great tour of duty and one that will stay with me forever.

I'm pleased to see the new website, very well organized and very responsive. I flew in VR-7 from Jan 58 through Dec 60, enjoyed nearly every minute. Was in Operation Big Slam and also was aboard the aircraft (44052?) which went into Johnston Island with 2 turning...both on same side during Christmas season 1959 with a plane load of VIPs going to Japan to do Christmas shopping. Spent several days in downtown Waikiki as payment for our efforts. Got really sick on Gin!
Would like to see a "master list" of those who have "set sail on their final voyage." I occasionally miss months...and would like to honor those I knew in my own way. Thank you. Good luck to all!

Corpus Cristi reminds me of sweating. (I thought Fla. was bad). Summer of '56 or '57 (?) I was on the crew to deliver one of our R6D's to the O & R at NAS Corpus and pick up one that had just been thru overhaul. We get in the overhauled one for an acceptance test flite and it must have had 120 deg. F Gulf of Mexico air in it and our gray haired VR-6 pilot takes off his pants and shirt and puts on a pair of old tattered khaki pants and sits in the left seat. No shirt and he has gray hair on his chest also and looks silly with his headphones on. We take off and we keep the outflow valves open to air it out until we get up to 10,000 ft. At the end of the flite its a hard landing back at NAS Corpus and the pilot gets a good ribbing from everyone. We park and when he gets up, the seat of his old pants are all red. Now someone jokes "That must have been a tougher landing than we thought." Our grizzled old Commander tells us they always put in new red dyed leather upholstry in the cockpit at overhaul and unlike me, it's not his first time at Corpus in August. I'm sure it will be much better in Nov.

Great job on the new look for the NavyMats web site! I have lots of good memories of my days in the Navy and flying with VR-3 crews. The Navy certainly lived up to the tag line that said, "Join the Navy and see the World"....

Robert Bergstrom:

I was in VR-7 during the Alaskan airlift but did not participate in that operation. I did participate in the Dominican Republic airlift.

I have also gone through the exercise of trying to decipher my log book’s airfield designator codes. Part of the problem is sometimes sloppy handwriting, sometimes different codes for the same airfield are used (ICAO or IATA codes) or sometimes US Military codes that are no longer used (CLK, CRK, RPMK all refer to Clark AB). I have put together a cross reference list of the ones found in my log book which you are welcome to have. Send me your e-mail address and I'll forward it as a PDF file.

NUQ (sometimes KNUQ) was NAS Moffett Field, HNL (sometimes PHNL) is Honolulu. Sometimes it's entered as HIK or PHIK for Hickam AFB, SUU or KSUU is Travis AFB. You asked about SUV, this might be a case of sloppy handwriting in the log book. If its .4 to .6 hours from Moffett (NUQ) then it's supposed to be Travis AFB.

I am writing to ask the members of the MATSVRS group to design a plaque to be installed in the National
Air Force Museum in Dayton during our reunion of 2009. The size is 12"long X 10" H. The design will be voted on in Corpus reunion. The cost will also have to be approved by the group from the fund. This is for the Navy squadrons attached to MATS 1948-1967. I would like to see a lot of designs to choose from

My father was the CO of VR-7 from 1962 to his retirement in 1965. Are there any members on line who were in the operations "Helping Hand" (Alaska earthquake March 27 1964) or the airlift of troops to the Dominican Republic (April 26 1965). I would like to hear from you if so. I just want to know what you did and what planes took part. Also was anyone involved in operation "Big Lift" (October 22 to 25 1963). I have been looking thru my dad's log books and note that the airfield abbreviations do not always match those on the internet. What airfields were NUQ, HNL, SUV? I know that AWK is Wake Island. Is there a list somewhere I can download? Thanks

VR-7 Hickam was my first duty station - Bainbridge Md, Norman Ok, Millington tn, to Hickam -- Great tour of all the exotic south sea Islands - Johnston, Kwajalien, Guam, Midway, and Clark. Being a newlywed I was not allowed to see the sights in Japan. On a TAD to Clark from Hickam, I told my wife I would be back in about a week or so. On the eighth day she began calling the OD wanting to know where I was! When I returned a few days later I was met at the terminal and told in no uncertain terms to call my wife immediately. Had an interesting trip to Midway, Connie had been fueled with JP and lost two engines just after take off, limped around to return, just made it over the sea wall onto the runway. We changed all four engines. Another incident, written up in the MATS magazine was a take off from Hickam, apparently without sufficient flaps, settled back on runway scraping belly, tearing off piss tube and shortening the inboard props about 12". Returned several hours later when cabin would not hold pressure -- Had holes in belly from pieces of props. Changed all engines and props, which were still in balance! Thanks for the memories
