Comments:

I was assigned to VR-3 from the destroyer USS Norris DD-859 out of Newport, Rhode Island. As an RMSN I was assigned the duties of typing all the upcoming assigned flights that VR-3 had been assigned. This included all the Cuban Blockade flights. I did have several flights locally as a "Scanner" so the flight pay was appreciated. After making RM3 I was transferred to NAVAIRTRANSWINGLANT on the other side of the base at McGuire AFB. VR-6 was also there providing all the maintenance of the C-118, then the C-130 aircraft that was flown by VR-3. My term of service ended on 4 August 1964, and I departed McGuire.

Comments:

I shipped out on the USS Anderson from San Francisco on December 7, 1953, arriving in Honolulu Harbor 6 days later on December 13. I was assigned a room in a barracks on Pearl Harbor until early January, 1954, stood shore patrol in downtown Honolulu on New Years eve with a Marine gate guard from Pearl Harbor, spending most of my energy keeping him out of trouble. I was then assigned to VR-7 on Hickam AFB. I took the test and was promoted from AT-3 to At-2 and later passed the AT-1 test but took discharge before being promoted. My wife and I rented an apartment up on the side of Punchbowl for about 6 months then found a unit in NHA-3 just outside of the back gate of Hickam. I was released from VR-7 for discharge in May, 1955 and we were flown to Travis AFB in a C-97. We spent about 2 weeks in the Marine Hotel in S.F in late May 1955 before I was discharged and mustered out of the service from Treasure Island Navy Station.

I'm looking for VR 8 patch that goes on flight jacket. Also interested in connecting with those who served at Hickam and alss when VR 8 relocated to Moffit NAS, CA in 1957.

That should do it.

Transferred from FAWTUPAC at Barbers Point to VR-8 at Hickam Field in 1949. Sent to NAS Agana, Guam, Worked with the USAF and shared nose docks. Worked with a Sgt Aggers. Our leading sweeper was an AF Mstr.Sgt. Also shared a nose dock with a Marine R5D Sqd. Can not remember the ID. Played baseball for the MATS team and later the NAS Agana Flyers. Before going to Guam I was at Hickam when the airplanes returned from Berlin. They were filthy and full of coal dust. Towed one aircraft away from the lights of the nose dock area and watched them unload a generals jeep that Jumpin' Joe Clifton, the Sqd Commander, had made himself a present of. Also both outboard nacelles had some stuff hidden inside. Later to be picked up by the flight crews.

Transfered from FAWTUPAC Barbers Point to VR-8 Hickam in 1949. Was there when the planes returned from Berlin. Most were filthy and full of coal dust. Watched them unload a generals jeep that our skipper Captain Jumpin' Joe Clifton made himself a present of. Sent to NAS Agana. Played baseball for the MATS team and later for the NAS Agana Flyers. Worked along side the Air Force. Called them "Rappies" I'm not sure why but it might have had something to do with leggings they wore years before. The leading sweeper for both the Navy and Air Force was a Master Sgt. Can not recall his name. Our Maintenance officer was Lt. Hall. I remember a Sgt Aggers. who lived two Q huts away.

I think I signed up once but a long time ago.
The Navy saved my life. It gave me a home, food, clothes and a chance at life. The Navy was a friend I never had before. It was a father I didn't have to teach me. A mother who was to busy working to show me attention. The Navy filled that gap. I loved the navy as a way of life.
I arrived at McGuire,AFB one bitter cold Dec day. I left 3yrs and 9mo later on a hot April 18th 1959
I will never forget my flights all over the world on a DC6 The crew that went down in the atlantic just after leaveing Shannon,Ireland were my friends and Co Workers. My God bless all them and a special tribute to Lt Smith. Bless you Lt Smith. Lt Smith was on the plane that went down.
Thanks to the USAF Lt that gave me the ride in a F-86 super sabre. We went rideing 4hrs over new England. LOVE THE NAVY john l yates carmi, ill 62821

Hit a big bird in India and spent the night in Calcutta while repairing.
Sunny Shato was big club in Bankok.
