Just discovered this website. It was nice to look at the entries and reminisce. I remember working for "Bigert Airlines"! Chief Bigert owned those airplanes. I learned a lot in that squadron. This brought back a lot of names I wonder about, Alvis Thomas Boone, J.D. Boone, Vickers, Gary Davie, Chief McCracken, Lt Ball, Charlie Royer. And those I saw in this guestbook, Nastali, Dennis Koch, Sam Swensen, Charlie Varnell, Gene Graham. When I where is the next reunion?

I want to express my thanks to all who attended the 2009 Navy Mats VRs reunion, specially to Howard and Carol McQuire, Phyliss Fannery who wrapped all of the gifts for drawing of gifts. I was not in the best of health. I was very glad to see our 1st chairman and reunion originator attend and to present the plaque to the Air Force Museum. My Son & Daughter was a great help to me making sure every one was served drinks and what ever was needed to make the reunion a success. This was BILL COX's first reunion as Chairman, I enjoyed working with him and I think that future hosts will enjoy it also.
Thanks Again and here is hoping to see all of you in Nevada next year

Reunions only happen because dedicated people are devoted to their task and are rarely appreciated or thanked for the work they do. A small group of us from VR-6 & VR-3 have been getting togeather since 1966 and understand this. Recently we learned of NAVY MATS and were glad to become a part of it. Great job on the Dayton reunion....our many thanks to the reunion crew .

Good times and great memories. Time goes by fast,it seems like only yesterday that we drank beer at the Drifters Reef on Wake Island or cheep wine in Japan. The missions were alway noble the causes great and the crews up for the challange. If it was't the MATS pouchases for Calcutta or the supplies for Da Nang/Cu Chi it was transporting a USO troop to one of the forward bases. I hope this message fines everyone in the best health and spirits.

Was on Guam in summer of 56 and am looking for any other shipmates that were with me at that time. I thought the duty was great and had some good times. About ten years ago, I talked Bob ? who was living in Texas and knew of me from the Guam days. He was to call me after he moved back east with his daughter but I never heard from him again. I have some pictures I took of VR8 shipmates on Guam in 1956 and would be glad send anyone interested in.

Gentlmen, I desperately need some assistance with my five year struggel with the Veterens Administration. I have two types of cancer that qualify under the Agent Orange legislation but cannot prove, to their satisfaction,
"boots on the ground". From 12/64 to 1/67, as a loadmaster, I made 20 trips in to Vietnam but like most of us have lost any paper work or records over the last 42 years, ( yes it's been that long) to prove I was in country. Who really nthought log books would be so important one day! The only thing left for me is to submit letters from former crewmateds who would be willing to write a letter that they knew or remenber me having been on the aforementioned missions.

The reason I'm fighting for the benefites, we are all entitled, when one of these cancers kills me, my wife will receive a pension from the VA. It is very difficult tracking former shipmates after all these years, and I"m not alone with this problem. There are many veterns fighting with the VA who figures if they can hold us off for another 10 years, there won't be any more agent orange cases filed. I hope someone rteads this and rtembers me and can be of assistance. thank you, GF Murphy PR1- RET

I recently found many pristine copies of "Nats Packet" in my father's belongings. He was in the Pacific Wing. I also have photos and many copies of the "The Skycracker" from his pre-flight school times, as well as many other items and pictures related to his flight training schedule in St. Petersburg, FL and some newspaper articles from San Franscisco during that time also.

Does your group collect this type of information for historical purposes? I would consider donating some, if not all, the items that are not private if they would serve any purpose for that WWII era history.

If you would like to contact me, please write me at rifenbcjr@msn.com My father's name was Paul Rifenburg, Jr. serving in 1945

What a happy time it was to function with so many wonderful and intelligent people. Soon
after checking into the squadren I was assiged to Crew 12 on Aircraft 131649. Naturally I must say that the mighty 649 was the flyenest R7V in both VR-7 & VR-8. After approximatly one your of A/C maint. duties, I was recruted for duties as an instructor in the R7V ground school under the outstanding Leadership of Herbert E. Montgomery AM1, who became a Navy commissined officer a year later. We had the best and most effective R7V Ground school in military aviation. We even had Airforce people attend. In late 1957 our squadrons were relocated to Moffet Field Calif.. Helped set up the ground school at Moffet Field and was transfered to NATTC Norman,OK and then to NATTC Millinton, Tenn. for Instructor Duty.

I was assigned to VR-3 from the destroyer USS Norris DD-859 out of Newport, Rhode Island. As an RMSN I was assigned the duties of typing all the upcoming assigned flights that VR-3 had been assigned. This included all the Cuban Blockade flights. I did have several flights locally as a "Scanner" so the flight pay was appreciated. After making RM3 I was transferred to NAVAIRTRANSWINGLANT on the other side of the base at McGuire AFB. VR-6 was also there providing all the maintenance of the C-118, then the C-130 aircraft that was flown by VR-3. My term of service ended on 4 August 1964, and I departed McGuire.

I shipped out on the USS Anderson from San Francisco on December 7, 1953, arriving in Honolulu Harbor 6 days later on December 13. I was assigned a room in a barracks on Pearl Harbor until early January, 1954, stood shore patrol in downtown Honolulu on New Years eve with a Marine gate guard from Pearl Harbor, spending most of my energy keeping him out of trouble. I was then assigned to VR-7 on Hickam AFB. I took the test and was promoted from AT-3 to At-2 and later passed the AT-1 test but took discharge before being promoted. My wife and I rented an apartment up on the side of Punchbowl for about 6 months then found a unit in NHA-3 just outside of the back gate of Hickam. I was released from VR-7 for discharge in May, 1955 and we were flown to Travis AFB in a C-97. We spent about 2 weeks in the Marine Hotel in S.F in late May 1955 before I was discharged and mustered out of the service from Treasure Island Navy Station.

I'm looking for VR 8 patch that goes on flight jacket. Also interested in connecting with those who served at Hickam and alss when VR 8 relocated to Moffit NAS, CA in 1957.

That should do it.
