I worked as a paper boy ,no girls allowed then ,so I became Carl and put my ponytail under my hat,was skinny -as then and no one caught me,got a job @ ginosteak house and lied again,we were supposed to be
16 but we were poor and I was tall 14 and no snoopy computer big brother yet ha ha! We hung out at Arbyroast Beef and went to drive in movies, we scared ourselves walking through the cemetary.A bunch of us walked to Dc stadium/Kennedy ctr 2 see Rolling Stones without tickets stayed for whole concert saw Stevie Wonder too drank the wrong free koolaid but made it home ok,lot of violence poverty in se Dc burbs I saw MLKjr preach @ NYA Presbyter. church! Our papa had a cross burnt on his lawn and death threats due to being a white civil rights activist.I cried during the riots so afraid as the poor burnt the DC ghetto Why? When integration was mandated they had to bus white kids to my sibling's Jr high, we were already integrated in Forestville my first bf was black we only held hands there were coat hanger endings but not all poor kids get into"trouble". Ray lives in California now near good man Billy Blakeslee who intro'd me to Dort. I dated George Mazzola from District Heights 69-77...met him at the carnival @ Penn Mar . Good times! But VietNam killed the poor kids first and crime brought guns which killed a few more the highway killed even more...poverty sucks but those were our old stompin grounds!!

Facebook has been a great place to find some old friends and now we have this site, thank you for creating it. Wouldn't it be great to be able to go to Murphey's and grab a burger? If you remember me please feel free to contact me, I would love to hear from you.

Going to oxen hill where my cousins used to live. Going to george town and more. There are lot of memories. Got my first hair cut of style at the mall there. It seems like another life time ago as if it was a different life. Wow was I surprised when I found this looking to see whatever happen to the red barn. I loved the Big Barney. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

Well I loved Red Barns

Comments:

I did not live at Marlow Heights but I did visit my sister there in 1971 I was 14 years old at the time and really enjoyed my stay. I remember how the girls teased me at Red barns because of my Limey accent and how I had to wait for my burger because at the time I would only eat plain burgers no mustard. I also remember fishing on the Potamac river maybe spelt that wrong but the memories are real good. I remember there were some people that had a dog named Berabus and if I had been to Red Barns the dog would not let me back into the apartment building until I give a bit of hamburger he used to wait for on a regular basis. Oh well happy memories of time past. All the best one and all of Marlow Heights from Pete Blott Hitchin Herts England

Teachers from HHES- Mr G, Mrs Linehan, Mrs Smith, Mrs Murphy, Mrs McDonald, Mrs Keathly, Mrs Layton, Mrs Williford... Playing dodgeball, kickball, tag at recess, Mr.g's field day/track meets (awesome!) . Going into the woods to play and explore after school. Kite flying on the playground, sledding down the Iverson Towers hill right in the 23rd Pkwy street (lucky we weren't killed!) Playing in all the storm drains.

There is so much more

i have a friend who is a member of this organization and it has been 35 years since we graduated high school .She goes to steak in a sack every 3 months for the reunion. This is good enough for her it is good enough for me. We still keep in touch after all these years. I am really lloking forward to seeing her. My friend still looks like she did in junior high and so do i. Potomac on the outside still looks the same. The very last time I was in Marlow Heights I got lost getting out of neighborhood , now that is funny but I did get out. I turned down a one way street. oh well.

Comments:

I have searched for some people that attended Camp Springs Elem. Glassmanor and Forest Heights Elem. schools. My best friend was Cynthia Green. I graduated in 1974 but not from the area. I moved in 1968 while I was in Forest Heights Elem. I remember waiting at the crosswalks at Indian Head Highway and the guards would have to walk you accross the two highways. I remember the Drug Fair, Eastover shopping center. I grew up on Branch Ave.(Camp Springs) and Leverett street.(Oxon Hill). Those were the greatest times back then. Things sure have changed a lot since then.

I am from Anacostia but have many fond memories and friends from the Marlow Heights area. My wife Ginny Salm went to Lorraine and then graduated from Potomac in 1972. I am retired but am active in a 10-piece 60's-70's Blue Eyed Soul Band out of Bowie, Maryland called "The Nowheremen". It's a 10 piece band who reunited after 40 years that plays all of the old favorites Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, Chicago, Blood, Sweat & Tears, Temptations and have been looking for a group like yours to see if maybe you'd like to have a band like this play at one of your annual events, or perhaps for a holiday party. I can provide as many references as you want as well as music samples, photos, website information etc. Let me know if this sounds like something you would be interested in talking about. The music is great, we just completed a joint concert with "The Fabulous Hubcaps" at the Greenbelt American Legion and we play all over P.G. county. I can be reached at (703) 791-2858 or (703) 915-7222 and my e-mail is don_halcombe@msn.com..............thanks a lot....................Don

Wow, what a walk down memory lane! Great idea! I lived in Gateway Square - 4869 St. B Rd. # T-2, lived on Wheeler Rd., Marlow Hgts. Condominiums, 26th Ave in Hillcrest Hgts, and then Clinton. Red Barn - hamburger, fries and a coke =$0.49, spent the $0.51 left from my $1.00 at 7-11 where I got a whole bag of penny candy. The restaurant that opened next to Red Barn used to be called Heap Big Beef, my father worked there a short time. It wasn't very successful. Elmer Ball owned the Shell gas station, Dart Drug, Tippy's Taco House then became Betty's Taco House, Little Italy Pizza, Arthur Treacher's, High's on Temple Hills Rd., Hagan Field, GC Murphy's in Hillcrest, Iverson Mall, Woodward & Lothrop, Monkey Wards, Kinney's Shoes, Brinson's in Clinton, Hecht's, Arcadian Gardens - my brother was Santa there a couple years, Sam,'s Car Wash, Dunkin' Donuts, Jiffy's Subs, Hot Shoppes, Potomac High - Marge McCormick- Nurse, Mr. Riggs, Carlson, Zeman, Watson, Wines, Kowalski, Solanki, Dave Taylor (currently Vice Principal at Huntingtown in Calvert County, wow, too much for me to process right now! I remember ridng my bike everywhere, safely, skate boarding, pogo sticks, goat man, bunny man, Hillcrest Hgts. Boys Club, boxing ring, Bingo, my first car - a 70 Cutlass-$700, what a nice trip down memory lane!!! Great job on this website.
