Comments:

My life long friend, Lloyd Schermerhorn, told me about this site on 9/26/2012. We go way back to the late 50's and early 60's. Silver Hill Boy's Club baseball, bowling duckpin's, Saturday night's at the Oxon Hill Firehouse. My other real go friend, Lenny Danelle, was the local barber in Suitland. He would cut all the Guy's hair. He gave my two son's thier first haircut's almost forty years ago. My last time at Steak in A Sack was, in 1972. I worked in the First National Bank of Southern Maryland at the Marlow Heights Center. Mr. Ralph Sonntag, had the hobby shop in the center. In high school, we were never late. Our bus driver was a race car driver and we had one of the first Metro Style Buses in 1966. The buses then did not have any engine mod's like the buses of today, as we went down Temple Hills Road, we reached 70 MPH. daily. That's all for now, Thank-You Michael A. Baxter

Comments:

Went thru the old neighborhood of Temple Hills Rd, Portal ave and Walnut St. Looks like a damned war zone!! What a shame. Temple Hills Elem is a pile of rubble. I remember walking to school with all the kids in the neighborhood. We all had some good times then, Jay Cicala, Linda Patriarca (my wife of 43 yrs), Joe Lagundo, Bobby Green, Kathy Buckler...everyone is spreadout all over the country now. One good thing is my original'61 Fender Strat is a antique just like me!!! Keep up the great work on the site...we need to remember the good times growing up.

Comments:

For the most part my years were just catching the bus, just getting a "C", and just existing from day to day. For excitement I would walk from Farley Pl. to the Orange Freeze at I verson Mall. I would order some fries, and a Orange Freeze and walk back. I was in the high school in my 11th and 12 grades. To express my idenity I wore a derby and took up the ugly habit of smoking. I quit in 1989. Since then my live has been exciting. I rose to the rank of Captain in the Army, married a beautiful lady, and have three kids. I liked Potomac, but during those years it was so much like "Leave it to Beaver. I wish it was more like the "Fresh Prince of Belair. Maybe then I would of coped a feel sooner.

Great Falls, Hanging out in Georgetown/DC on weekend nights, driving my '67 VW

Comments:

Grew up in a Military family, moved quite a bit but always returned to the DC area for Andrews AFB or the Pentagon. I attended Surrattsville elementary and 7th grade at Surrattsville Jr High when we lived in Clinton Maryland off of Kirby Road in Summit Hall area. I remember Mr Baker for my 6th grade teacher, he started as a substitue and became our permanent teacher. He taught the class how to do perspective drawing, how great was that! At Crossland we lived in the Westchester neighbor. I remember Mr Wurzbach (sp) for homeroom at Crossland. There was a Ms Cleaver who taught either 11 or 12 grade English class at Crossland. I can't recall my Topics of Democracy teach, but he was great. I can clearly see his face and hear his voice but can't recall his name at the moment. In my neighborhood during High School we had Charlie Novotny, Bob Benefield, Rick Linkus, Mike King/Pete Bozick (Catholic School guys), Dave Johnson. At school Jeff Hermann, the Bille(i)t twins, Ross Erwin and many other people.

It was a great time to grow up in the Clinton/Camp Springs area to say the least and attend a brand new modern High School.

My story is on myspace listed under facebook at brianremembered Hope you have the time to look at it-- I was a mess in high school. I wasn't much better when I went away to college. Luckily, I found a wonderful woman and we have been married for 45 years. When we were 34 a drunk driver followed our 8 years old son into our driveway. We have both worked very hard since 1981 to help stop drunk driving. I did it myself when I was young- because, as I stated above, I was a mess and stupid. It does come a time in life though when everyone should know better. Since our son was killed, there have been over 500,000 more sons, daughters, brothers and sisters killed. Since 1981 there have been at least 2,500,000 people that are seriously and permanently damaged. If you get a chance please go to our myspace website or facebook or Youtube and take a look at the videos. Laugh the first time you see it when you see my sideburns and goofy glasses, and then look at it to listen to the message.
At this point in our lives, we cannot continue to allow this to take our grandchildren from us.

I went from being skinny to being fat--- I was just the right weight for about 15 minutes.-

Thanks Bert

Longtime Temple Hills residents may very well remember a hiddious rattled-out '66 Plymouth Belvadere. That was my late grandmother's auto. I was her care-giver (she was too neurotic to be left alone for any period of time). We occupied a two story duplex on Dallas Drive from '69 until she became unable to care for heresel around 2001, and it became necessary to make other arranements.

PG county holds very few ggod memories for me, as I was basically held prisoner there. The house on Dallas Drive sold for $100,000, but I never had any financial benefit from it. My (late) father was a drunk and a gambler, and its gone now.

Thanks for the "tour." Let's touch base sometime.

Edward

Too many to name

Comments:

Moved to Deer Park Heights on Thanksgiving Day in 1955 from Southeast DC. I lived on Walnut Drive until the county renamed it to Deer Park Drive in the 60's. Right after graduating from Potomac in 1972, went to work at Atlantic Auto Service in the office and met my future husband who was the manager of the store at that time. We were married in December 1974 at Grace Brethren Church on St. Barnabas Road. Unfortunately, I lost my husband in September 2010 to lung cancer. I have a lot of nice memories from the old neighborhood. Use to hang around Melanie and Diana Gibson who lived on the corner of Akron and Deer Park Drive, Janice and Jerry Allport-their father also worked at Atlantic Auto, and Fred and Ernie Reckling. I knew quite a number of families who lived in Deer Park Heights: Stones, Kellers, Wesselmans, Roach, Cabana, Lavsa, McCormicks, Holmans, Purcells and Santana's just to name a few.

sledding on the street

Comments:

I lived in Marlow Heights when my father was stationed at Andrews AFB. I went to Sandymount and was so surprised to see my 1st grade class picture on this website. I lived there until 3rd grade and moved to Florida.I think I lived on 24thAve. (not sure) My friends were Marie Allacarti, Marlene Lutter and we lived next door to my babysitter, Linda Lovelace. I remember walking to school which seemed pretty far especially in the ice. I remember sledding down what I remember as a steep hill near a middle school. I remember running home to tell my mother that President Kennedy was killed. I have fond memories of playing in the street and of all the neighbors shooting fireworks on the fourth of July. I loved catching fireflies in the summer. I drove through the neighborhood in December of 2010 as my son and I were traveling to Pennsylvania for the holiday. The houses still look pretty good but seem so much smaller than I remember. Thanks for the memories.

I remember the Red Barn very well. When I saw the picture of the Red Barn it triggered chiled hood memories. I did eat at one when I was a kid. But I cannot recall where it was. I lived in California all my life. Do you know if there was one in the Hayward San Leandro area. I am sure I walked to it when I was a kid.

Friends, Neighbors, Being able to walk everywhere you needed to go.

Comments:

I have a lot of memories of Hillcrest Heights. We lived on Lyons Street. Our family included Eddie/Benny, Kathy, me Jean, Janice. We went to Sandymount, Stoddert and Potomac. We didn’t ride a bus until high school.

We played hide and seek with the neighbors, (and it was okay to hide in the other neighbor’s yards). We played kick ball in the street, on a curb where you had to pay attention to the sound of oncoming cars, and our parents let us! LOL. I remember sledding down Keating Street after it snowed. Thank God there was a 4 way stop sign at the bottom of the hill. I can’t remember if we had enough sense to have a lookout for cars or not, but probably not! We used to have crab apple fights (boys against the girls). And they hurt when you get hit. We survived playing outside all the time!

I went to all of my brother’s football and baseball games. He hated us cheering for him! We did it anyway. He played for the Silver Hill Boys Club, Stoddert and Potomac.

I remember when the Iverson Mall was being built and we used to ride our bikes on the car garage ramps before it was open. I remember when there was a rickety old walking bridge where Olsen and Raleigh streets intersect (down the street from Stoddert). I hated walking across that bridge to go to the Marlow Heights Ally to go bowling. Most of the time we cut through the woods behind Stoddert. I don’t remember when they tore that bridge down and made it a road; it made it quicker and easier to get to Marlow Heights.

I loved the royal burgers at Jr. Hot Shop and the Pizza from Pizza Pan. My Mom worked at the A&P. One of our chores was to walk to her work and go grocery shopping with her and then get a ride home. Ernestine from Pizza Pan called me and my twin sister Kathy (Little Sue’s) because she never knew which one of us was which and she knew we were Sue Harrell’s daughters. That was easier for her to remember. I understand memory loss now, darnit!

The families that I remember in our neighborhood were the Neuland’s, Taylor’s (moved away), Miller’s, Long’s, Jeane’s (the Mormon’s), Hartonge’s (don’t know the spelling), Johnson’s, Brami’s, French’s, Cusato’s, Skinner’s (moved away), Alicardi’s, Baton’s, West’s. Our neighbor Mrs. Hallwick (I don’t know the spelling of her name either) used to drive me and Michael Neuland to summer school at Suitland High. And I remember many, many more families that were in the area that were involved with the boys club. Our parents didn’t just mean Mom and Dad; everybody was allowed to yell at us if we were doing something wrong.

Marsha Limbacher was my best friend. She moved away in the 7th grade. We have kept in touch for 40 years. Kathy Barbour contacted me when our 30 year Potomac reunion took place. We went together and had a great time. We have kept in touch ever since. Julie Miller Stone contacted me through Facebook and we just had our first reunion. I am hoping for many more! She told me about this site.

I moved to Alexandria, Virginia in 1982. Then to Woodbridge in 1993. I had the good sense to move back to Maryland in 1995. I have an 18 year old son. I work in Washington, DC for a non-profit organization. I’ve been with them for 24 years. I’m getting ready to attend my first Steak in a Sack meeting.

Thank you for a stroll down memory lane. How can we ever forget those good old days. Even our parents had it so much easier back then. What a complicated and stressful life we have to live these days! Technology is great these days and will be better for our children and theirs and so on!
My first job was at the Red Barn in "72" I remember the mini skirts were in and the manager was horrible, lol! Sexual harassment began for me on my first job!
I use to babysit for the owners of steak and the sack. Can't wait to receive your news letters, Thank for sharing the now and then of Marlow Heights and surrounding area. You left out Oxon Hill though, we we're a big part of Marlow heights also !

Thanks

This site is awsome it has allowed me to reach so many friends that I have not seen in ages and can now re-connect with after 35 years. I have heard from friends from Jr high and it is amazing that we can remember the things we did that would not be allowed now.ExampleI remember cutting 4th period before a game running out the back door of Stoddard and going thru the whole in the fence thru the apartments (marlow heights) to
the shopping center where Giant(still is)and steak in sack then home. Theree was a whole group of us too numerous to mention, some now are in law enforcement, lawyers, post office workers etc, that's right thatis clue as to who you were. Went to Potomac skipped (4th period) and went to the mc-donalds by the old PG County Police station(oxon-hill) and the library we got caught some-times but still did it again. Those were fun times. The thrill and the fun was not getting caught and if we did we always had the same line if parents were called so we all got in trouble together. I lost alot of hair, but never my friends. After all this time it is nice to know we are still friends just alittle more refind.

Comments:

There used to be a "fort" that was built in the trees behind Benjamin Stoddart Jr. High, and we used it to skip school, Mr. Flynn never found us there.

I also remember going to the Marlow Heights Theater, when it only had a single screen. And going to Steak in a Sack after school. My Mother worked at the Hecht Co. back then as a shortage clerk.

I also remember the following people: Ron Dillon, Paul Dillon, Tammy Greer, Evelyn (Joan) Thomas, Janet Thomas, Eddie Lava, Joe Sweet, Teddy D'Angelo, Carmela Nickolosi, Rick Farell, and a lot of other people, wish I could see them all again, but living in Arizona makes that pretty hard but when I do come for a visit, I will stop in the Steak in a Sack...

I served one tour of duty in Viet Nam and returned back to the states in May of 1969.
