This was the most memorable experience of my younger years and was my start in the electronics field. I worked in private industry for 22 years and then for DOD a total of 25 years (Military Aircraft flight computers of various types). I definitely credit my Navy ATN training as a very good basis for my lifetime carreer, thouroughly enjoyed my 2 years with VR-3, and the many flights to several world locations.

I am a 50-year old Navy veteran, and former Naval Aircrewman and now employed as an airline pilot. However, in 1961 I was a very sick toddler and I was MEDEVAC'd to Travis AFB and ultimately Philadelphia Naval Hospital aboard a Navy Connie. To those men and women in the crew(s) that jhad a hand in saving my life. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Regards,

Scott Fitzpatrick

Am looking for information from crew mates of my dad who flew co-pilot and pilot in the Pacific carrying materal in and wounded out of Guam, Okinawa, Shanghai etc. There was a nurse named Candi. My dad is alive and well and just retired this last fall. Any information would be appreciated.

My wife Sharon and I will host the reunion this year in Laughlin, Nv. Everyone always says it's sure good to hear about the old times and see the names of
some old shipmates---so, lets go to Laughlin and maybe meet in person. The price is right and Laughlin is a very relaxing and fun place.

SIGN UP-----MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS ----- and Lets all get together. Remember, People make the memories. Lets Go.

Hope to see you there. Joe

P.S. Just bought a C-172----but because I have so much Booze to take to Laughlin, won't be shuttling people back and forth from Las Vegas.

I hate to sound like a broken record, but I still in desperate need for someone,in VR7 Who went to Vietnam with me, or rembers me on missions to Vietnam to write a letter for me to help me in my agent orange fight with the Veterans Administration. I cannot prove "boots on the ground" and the VA just dismisses the huge amount of information I provided on VR7; It's history combat records etc. All meaningless unless I can prove I was in-country.
Thank you for ure assistance

I came to VR-8 from VR-2 when it was disestablished in early 1958. Left in Sept 59 with an early discharge to attend college. I worked mainly in the Electronics shop and flight check crew after we went to the Air Force system. I spent the winter of 59-59 at NAF Litchfield AZ on a VR-8 Detachment. After getting out of active duty I stayed in the reserves until 1961. I rejoined in 1968 with a commission in Naval Intelligence. Got out in 1978.

My final weeks of AE "A" School in Jax in 1955 and a guy in another class with a brother in VR-6 keeps telling us how much his brother loves it. I'm interested because it's 4 hours to my home in Kingston, NY but every class graduates and no billet. Then my class of 43 guys graduates and there are billets on dozens of NAS, carriers and all kinds of squadrons including 3 billets for AE's in VR-6. I am top in my class and grab the first and the instructor gives me a funny look. Joe Szmer is from Brooklyn (2 hours up the NJ Turnpike) and as a reward for being Class Leader he gets the next pick and also takes VR-6. Now the instructor is joking that we aren't "real" sailors if we go to an Air Force Base. Another kid Mac (?) from Mich. picks around 5 or 6 and takes the last billet. THREE VERY LUCKY GUYS. We hated to leave after 2 years but I finaly got 3 quick cruises on two carriers in my last year.

My experiences serving in NATS VR-1 during the latter part of WWII had a life long influence. The skills developed through my naval schools training are forever. This experience led me to seek higher education and ultimately to teach on the college and university level.I owe a great deal to the older men in VR-1 who mentored me.Men like George H. Armstong,J.P.Dallabeta,Martin Deutch.Stan Stanislawski,Chiefs King and Neal,Commander Somomyer.Captain Dyer, and Admiral Reeves made VR-1 a great place to serve our country. The VIPS that used our facilties were awesome. We were a Flag Squadron Servicing all R5Ds used by fleet commanders.Admirals Nimitz,Halsey,Forrester,Ingram,King, and Secretary ot the Navy,James Forrestal to name a few.Just before I was discharged in May of 1946 we flew the body of Manuel L.Quezon to California where it was loaded on a destroyer for return to the Philippines.Just before D-day in France VR-1 flew mine detecting equipment to England.I never expected as an 18 year young boy to have such an adventure as the Navy developed me into a 21 year young man.So many things were done by VR-1 during the time I served that there is not enough space to describe them.A stint in Naval aviation would be of immense value to the youth of today.I discovered that you can take the man out of the Navy but you can not take the Navy out of the man.

Great time flying the world. Got out of the Navy in 66 went to Capitol Airways Wilmingto Delaware flew Connies then DC8 from there to Japan Airlines DC8s and that got me to Anchorage Alaska flying the Polar route to Europe for a number of years. Started flying B727 for British Petroleum as F/E. went on to the right seat then Captain and retired as Senior Capt. Was Director of Flight Training on B727 for a company in Alaska and finished up there as FAA Checkairman all 3 seats on the 727.
Ran into George Childers (VR3 Pilot) at Northern Air Cargo in Anchorage. George was the Cheif Pilot when I was Dir. of Training.
We ferried a 727 to Tucson for Maint. and George was my Co-pilot. All you Pilots out there remember to be good to your Flight Engineers someday they might be your boss.

I was a load master VR7-A under the command of Commander Bernard F. Gerdes. Remember a few names i.e. Nalley, Milton Onekea (kind of a simple Hawaiian), Whipple, (mainly because he was standing at the window one time thinking it Was Commander Gerdes taxiing the plane around saying "no no Bernie, not that way" as Commander Gerdes had walked in behind him)Also, Bochet (sp) the parachute rigger. Usually flew with LCDR Ed Toner who I believe became a TWA pilot flying out of New York. He was a great guy and probably still is if still alive! One of the best Irishmen I ever knew. He and his wife would have crew members over once in a while for a home cooked meal and a little veno. Nally was a 2nd class studious type with a wry sense of humor and a wry mustache! I had one Captain's mast while stationed at Tachi. One night I had fire watch from 1200/0200. While making my rounds I decided to buy a candy bar from the vending machine. I pulled the plunger, my money was taken but no candy! Can't remember the guy's name, but a friend was sitting on the couch close to the machine. I said " help me lay this thing over to see if the candy will fall out". As we laid it on its face all the change fell out of the machine. Being rational sailors, we decided the money spewing from the horizontal machine was probably what we had lost over time in this particular critter. The next day CID was in dusting the machine. This was done just before the Japaneese removed their machine. I told my partner in crime we had better put a stop to this investigation before too much time was spent on catching the culprits. We went down to flight opps to see the Chief. The chief said "what can I do for you boys"? I said, "Chief, hear your looking for the guys who hit the vending machine in the barracks"? Chief said "yes I am and anything you can tell me will be held in the strictist of confidence"! I said "Thats great since we did it"! We both got 14 days restriction to post but strangely, never had to give the money back! My most emotional moments on every flight from Viet Nam to Clark was when that little 8 piece band would run out to greet us and play the National Anthem as we offloaded litter patients. I think of that scene often. I also remember vividly being on the A/C that flew Marry Martin around doing Hello Dolly for the troops. When I gave them flight information on the plane, they would applaud. Feel free to contact me any time, those were very meaningful times in my life.

Loved the squadron and tour of duty in Japan. Have to agree with the sailor that was in the squadron when it was transferred to Tachi. The Air Force food SUCKED!!! Of course, houseboys and own room wasn't such a bad deal. Use to go to Atsugi for C-121 parts and was given lots of shit...

I was on Google Earth last night and decided to look at exactly where Wake Island was. When I saw where it was, I was really amazed and thankful to God and the crew of my RV7-1 Super Connie flight heading for Guam. I have no precise date but it was in the June 1956 - Dec 1957 time frame. I forgot where we originated from but it had to be either Okinawa or Japan.
Enroute we were struck by lightening and the cabin filled with smoke. The Captain advised he was going to land at Wake. I sat there looking out the window and seeing only darkness. We must have been in a thunderhead as hail rattled the fuselage. We were all sweating out finding such a small island in the middle of the night. Soon the aircraft slowed and the engines grew quiet and we were all pleased to hear the familiar scritch of tires hitting tarmack.
When we disembarked to allow an inspection of the aircraft we all could see that the radio antenna had snapped an was caught up in the tail of aircraft. I can still remember the relief of standing there and smelling a sweet tropical breeze and being glad to be alive.
My hats off to that crew and all of the other professionals of The Military Air Transport Service.
