Arrived in Japan an AA. Wasn't very motivated. Later woke up and left two years late ADR3. First person I worked for was Samuel Swenson
swabbing decks in the barracks. Noticed he made a career of 30 and retired as CWO-4. Way to go Sam! I served four years and four months actrive duty and then mustered out May 2nd, 1966. I became a Baptist preacher and pastored Baptist churches in Arkansas and California for over 40 years. I will be 70 September 4, 2011. I am now retired and doing pulpit supply now and then.

Which VR squadron was assigned to the Frankfurt Germany during the Berlin Air Lift? They were billeted at the Freidberg Kascern Barrackso(SP) outside of Frankfurt 1948-1949. Is there a listing of those members assigned? The person I am looking for would have been from Pennsylvania. thank you

Hi,

Served with VR-8 from Nov. 1965 till Jan. 1967 when squadron was decommissioned. That was great duty. Volunteered for the soon to be secret squadron VO-67. Flew as combat aircrew man, Second Tech and window gunner (M-60), with Crew-5. Modified P-2V5 aircraft (OP-2E)were used to implant sensors along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Laos and Vietnam at very low levels. Many folks from VR-8 ended up in VO-67 and perhaps some were among our 20 KIA’s. Check out the VO-67 web site at WWW.VO-67.org . Check out the roster pages to see if you knew anyone.

I served as a Flt. Eng. at VR-22, Norfolk, Va. from '58-61, flying to Newfoundland, Lajes/Azores, Port Lyote/Morocco, Stockholm/Sweden, Gitmo/Cuba, Arnhem/Holland, Germany, Tripoli/Libya. People I remember
there-D.R. Smith, O.D. Riggs/Okla. Prior to this assignment I served as FE in VP56/Norfolk for 2 1/2 yrs. The last year there I was the First Flight Engineer for #1Boat, the Commanding Officer's plane. I resigned the Navy in '61 after 10 years to attend the SBC Seminary/Ft. Worth,TX. I pastored several churchs in Texas, owned/operated a home improvement business and retired in '92. I am married for '62 yrs., with 4 children. My pastor at the time I entered the Christian Ministry was William R.(Bill) Smith who was originally from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.. He pastored at one time in Richmond, Va.. I would like to contact him if possible.

Wow, I didn't know about this organization until now. If possible, I would like to attend the next reunion. I would like to look up a couple of friends that were in VR-8 at the same time, George Losee and Tom Alston. Most of the time in the squadron, I was on the graveyard flight line shift. We pre-flighted and blocked out the morning flights and what ever maintenance problems that would come up. I transferred to VP-48/31 at NAS North Island in November of 1961, crew member in P5-M's. After mustering out in March of '62'. I returned to the SF Bay area and worked many years in the aerospace industry. Lived in Sunnyvale and San Jose until 1975. Moved to Gardnerville Nevada from '75 to '85' then returned to home farm in Carson City Michigan.

My father CMDR William J. Everett was a pilot in VR-3 from 1958-1961.
I ran into Tony Chirico last week and he served with my father. Small world.
I was looking for some photographs of the squadron. My father flew Super Connies
before he joined this outfit. And I think he flew DC-6s with this squadron.
Good Luck to all of you. Fair winds and following seas.

I am the middle of a 5 year struggle with an agent orange claim with the Veterans Administration proving I was in-country Vietnam. I don't have flight orders or a log book and despite the volumes of information i have submitted to the VA, I can not proove "boots on the ground". Even a document from the Wing stating I had made twenty combat support missions was dismissed as evidence as it did not state we landed in Vietnam. I'm also fighting a losing battle with two types of cancer, both approved as caused from exposure to agent orange. At this point, the only evidence I can provide to prove my claim is "buddy letters". If there is anyone oput there who remembers flying with me to Vietnam, or can vouch they knew I flew into Vietnam and would be willing to write a letter would be the only way I can win my case. I would be extremely gratfull. If you can help, please call me at (360) 679-9105

I was Air Force but somehow started running with VR-7A personnel in Tachikawa Japan 1961 to 1963. I even sided with the Navy in a Downtown Tachi brawl once.
When I rotated back to the states they "piped me over the side" causing lots of strange looks from other passengers. At the time I was known as "Preacher". Anyone remember a skinny drunk airman?

Hello fellow VR's. It sure is great to scroll through this log book and view all you great guys. Sure brings back some great memories. I sighned into to 8 in March of '52 under Captain Bernard Strean. What a great Skipper he was and the best Plane Commander I ever flew with. I'm sure he is gone b now as he was at least 10 years older than me. Not to long after I joined 8 they split us and created VR-7. We shared the same facilities and some of my buddies went into 7 while I stayed in 8. I'm not a currently paid up member of this reunion group, but would like to get current. I attended a reunion a couple years ago in Tunica Mississippi and really had a great time. That reunion was only attended by VR-7 and 8 guys. I'll be planning on the 2011 in Pensacola if health permits. I visited the Museim in Pensacol this past year and really enjoyed it. They had a baby Connie on display with the radar gear installed. The R5D's and R7V's "Super Connies" were great planes. Hope to see some of you guys soon, GOD BLESS YOU EACH AND EVERY ONE!!!

FINE!! Web Page.
We had about 40 people at the first meeting in 1981 and the first reunion in 1982, at the Marriott hotel in Santa Clara, we had 402 people for the dinner/dance. I had a few people say that this would never go,but when I turned the books over to Stud Horner in 2006, we had over 1500 signed up.
I spent 37 years at Moffett Field, 15 in vrs and 22 at Ames Research Center. GOOD duty.

I was sent to VR 7 at Moffett Field and was transferred to the Avionics Shop in VR 8 and worked there in all 3 areas of Communications, Navigation, and Radar check and repair. I also worked on Avionics check and repair and replacement on the C 121 and the phase in of the C 130 begining in late 1963. My memories of people (and they are fading)are of only Avionics personnel. I guess we didn't socialize out of the shop. I enjoyed those years. Forrest Holdeman

I have signed the book before, but don't find my name in the roles. Came to VR6 from JAX NAS AE school. Tony Bennett singing "I left my heart in San Francisco" in the lockers in JAX city where we all changed from our whites to our civvies for a big night on the town. Multilayered rum "zombies" in the local. Chose VR6 when I was the first in line to choose a duty station from AE school. Thought multi-engines would give me more chance to fly (and was correct). Left VR6 before it went to NJ. Left while we were just starting to get the R6D's. Have really fond (bizarre) memories of snow coming in through the cracks around the windows in the antiquated barracks and piling up on my bed while I slept. Watched the McCarthy hearings in the day room. Our mascot "Weisbaden" the german shepherd (or whatever he was for sure). Can't remember a better time in my life, except for the 2-4 watch on the flight line in the winter. That sucked! Shore patrol in Springfield and Chicopee Falls was a great get away from the base. Never did encounter any problems. Was life just less hostile and violent then?

Got to Hickam AFB at Christmas time and what a beautiful place and signed in to VR-8. As most of you will remember the mat side walks around the barracks with the holes in them. Was asigned to Check crew 4 and served with the best group of sailors there was. We had R5D's when I first joined the group and then in the spring we started getting the R7V's and what a great plane that was. Went to the Lockheed school there in the armory building between the nose docks and barracks. I was asigned to a engine change unit and we would go TAD to alot of places for engine change, The first change we did at Midway Island for our first and the plane that flew our spare engine to us drop the tail on the ramp as the engine slid to the back door. Burnt off the fuel and the weight and balance was to much off. Some of you might have seen my picture of it. Good to see the group still hanging togeather. I went to a small reunion 3 years with a small group in Branson MO. Alot of friends are gone now and May God Bless all of You
