Checked in to VR-22 after returning from a 3 month Med. cruise aboard U.S. Lake Champlain. VS-27 Norfolk-Had 1 yr. left on enlistment. Thoyght very seriosly
about leaving the Navy. I liked every thing about VR-22, so I reuped for another 4yr. tour. BEST THING i HAD EVER DONE!!
Flew all the regular routs and I think some specials to Upper Herford, England- Athens,Grease-Maili, Central Africa-Torino, Italy
Cuban Missel Crisis and VIETNAM. MY QUESTION IS were there any other flights to Vietnam . The flight I made was in July or Aug. 1962.
I cannot find any reference until 1965 when the Sqdn was re located to Moffit Field, Ca. Nor can I remember the crew members on my flight.
sHOULD HAVE KEPT A LOG BOOK!!! If any one remembers making a Nam flight I would appreciate knowing about it. May help me on an "Agent Orange" claim.

I am looking forward to the Savannah, GA. reunion--have never been able to make it--Hopefully this yr because it is much closer.

Thanks for any info: Gerald B. Craddock (ATC retired)

Made many flights to Korea PI Viet Nam etc. Enjoyed my tour in Det A. We were doing something worthwhile on the medivac flights. I still feel good about that. I finally retired as a cwo4 in 1989. Some of you who knew me in Tachikawa would not believe I was able to retire at any rank.LOL.

Worked in X division sweeping runway between Hickam and John Rogers for a couple of days. Decided to volunteer for the first thing that came up. They needed someone who could type in the maintenance office. Took the temporary job, it lasted 2 1/2 years. Best job I ever had!!! Stayed until going home for discharge. Was here when we got the new R7V-1 aircraft. and also for the split into VR7 and VR8. Loved it here then, love it here now. Would like to hear from anyone in VR8 at the time. Have visitrd Hickam a couple of times in the last few years. It's not the same.:)

I signed the guest book #378 & #87. I'm 86, date was 6/2012. I have a few books "Before The Jets" which I wrote myself. Send me $5.00 and I will send it to you. I went to my last reunion - I have to watch my health. I was a "hard nose" check pilot and check navigator. I gave a "down", when I was an ensign to the Operations Officer (a CDR). I would give my mother a "down" if she does not meet to standards. Since then, I mellowed a lot!!

Had the pleasure of visiting Moffett in July. The blimp hanger had the skin removed. A lot more buildings but many of the old ones are still there. Went into the museum and there was not much on MATS. The curator showed me a yearbook of all the members of VR-7 in 1965. They need more space to really show all the squadrons that called Moffett home. Could not visit the hangers that the squadrons used, they were off limits. Glad that they are using Moffett for other uses and and not turning it into a housing development. The field is still active (the president landed there last year). The trip brought back some good memories. Whish I had time to jump in the pool again!

This is a great site. Thanks to whoever is doing it. I was an ABH3 flying with Super Connie crews, mostly cargo missions and a few passenger. Best job in the Navy. I was a short timer in early '63 and didn't ship over for C130 loadmaster training. I never knew what happened to the squadron till I stumbled on this site. I hope to hear from some of my crew mates from back in '62 and '63. I have great memories of those times. As a civilian, I spent a career in Semiconductor related manufacturing manufacturing. I'm now an author specializing in Texas historical fiction.

Comments:

Greetings from Mark Dodge,
I am trying to gather details on a Navy R4D-5 that may have been assigned to VR-13. The BuNo for this aircraft is noted as: 39090 and had arrived in Brisbane in November, 1943.
At this time, I have not been able to locate any formal MACR (Missing Air Crew Report) or other comprehensive packet that will help me understand the loss of this aircraft.
Conflicting reports make it appear as if the plane was southbound for Cairns from Port Moresby and other reports show that the flight-plan was northbound for Momote Aerodrome.
Aboard the flight of 23JUL44 was my cousin Frank H. Dodge (AM1c) and that last known navigation fix placed the aircraft over the Coral Sea, south of Port Moresby.
After being declared missing and overdue, surface vessels and allied aircraft initiated a search for the next 5-days, but no trace of wreckage was found - until 1970.
There is indication that Australian Military forces may have been dispatched to the crash-site and remains were recovered for examination and forensic artifacts removed for evaluation.
Of the 15 passengers and crew, 11 were verified and returned stateside for interment. The 4 sailors who were unidentified were interred in a common grave at Jefferson Barracks Cemetery.
If anyone within the NAVY-MATS groups has knowledge about details to help me understand some of the facts and operational history of this transport aircraft and those who flew her.
In advance, thank you for your time to review this letter. I am composing a family history album for Frank's younger brother and would appreciate any help your can offer in this search.
With best regards,
Mark Dodge

Comments:

My step dad Donald D. Reed who for lived in Hawaii while with VR 21 & VR 8 and then moved to Moffett in Northern CA is almost 91 years old he would love to hear from those that served with him, he also was part of the crew for the Berlin Airlife. He now lives in Southern CA his address is Donald D. Reed 27119 Fairlane Drive, Sun City, CA 92586
He is in good health, uses a walker but gets around and his favorite times and memories are the times he was in the NAVY he retired as a chief and I believe served almost 30 years in the NAVY he will be 91 on July 25th. If you have a mailout list for reunions it would be great to keep my dad on your mailing list as he would love to hear about what is happening and for years when he was getting info he did attend lots of the reunions.

Thank you, Robbie Motter, step daughter of Donald D. Reed

I get cold sweats when I watch a video of a connie, I also remember every flight like it was yesterday, especially those to vietnam. Wake Island was a favorite stop. After 50 years one might think we would forget alot of it. CDR Brasser was the AC on my first trip into Saigon what a rush that was. CDR Brasser could set a connie on the runway and reverse props so smooth you didn't know you were on the ground.
One flight we went to karatchi, picked up a full load of UN troops and took them to Biak New Guinea, I learned real fast how to say fasten seat belts and no smoking in pakistani, about half got out of their seats when the skipper turned off overhead seatbelt and no smoking and beat feet to the rear. Needless to say there was an instant oh s-------.
the biggest mistake I ever made was not staying in the navy, second biggest mistake was getting married. I am looking forward to the reunion. take care everybody, wheels and flaps up!

Well after 10 years of trying I finally received from the US Navy the Vietnam Service Medal for my dad (CO of VR-7 Captain Edward. W. Bergstrom). He qualified for the Armed Forces Expeditionary because he flew into Saigon and other areas in SEA during 1963 to 1965. The VSM was not approved for the military until after he retired in July 1965. Any pilot or crewmember who received the AFEM due to service in Vietnam before 1965 had the option to change it to the VSM (this is what I did) He passed away in 1967 and it has been up to me to get all of his medals which he was eligible for. The big hold up was dealing with the civilian employees. They lost my requests on many occasions and pretty much did not care. It was not until I had the luck of finding a Navy Chief who worked in the awards department. That person was able to get many medals awarded to my dad for me and also some Air Force and Coast Guard unit awards of which I never knew about. My next project is getting him the Navy Cross medal which he should have received in 1942 but was not because the wing secretary lost the paperwork. That will be a challenge to say the least.
