Served 2-17-77 to 2-17-81 as a IC3. I wonder what happened to some of my shipmates? The Navy was a good thing for me, many positive influences on my life.

Comments:

Shipmates,

Reidar Oscar Olsen was my dad. Some of you knew him but he is now part of the generation of the past. Dad passed away peacefully yesterday morning, February 7th 2016 at 07:50 CST, in Park Ridge, IL in the presence of each of his 6 children. He would have turned 85 on February 10th. By our family standards he indeed was the world’s greatest Dad and Grandpa; proven through his open love… and applied with a just and caring strength as we were raised; often validated in the hugs, and coffee mugs and t-shirts given to him by his kids and grandkids.

Dad joined the Navy in October of 1951 during the Korean War. He often joked he was a “draft dodger” because he didn’t want to join the Army, therefore he actively enlisted in the Navy instead. I agree it is a form of draft dodging albeit fully patriotic! He loved his country and being an American. He loved the US Navy especially. He proudly served for several years aboard the ammunition ship USS Wrangell (AE-12) for most of his tour, cruising the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea extensively. Dad credited the Navy for shaping much of his education, values and traits. He never missed a chance to talk to his kids about it the great experiences he lived as a sailor. He was well trained in his Navy rating as a Boiler Technician (BT) and achieved the rank of petty officer second class (BT2). Working with boilers, fuel oil, steam turbines, and maintenance, it was an incredible “applied degree” in thermodynamics and engineering education.

Please pass the word to any of your members who may have known him. When he was healthier some years ago he would do the reunions with my mother and loved them. His visitation and funeral services are being planned for February 13th 2016 at Oehler's Funeral Home http://www.dignitymemorial.com/oehler-funeral-home-des-plaines/en-us/index.page with a private family burial to follow. I loved him dearly and will miss him. For those who knew him as a shipmate or brother in arms, send along a prayer and wish him farewell and following seas.

Very respectfully,

CDR Peter E. Olsen
