Comments:

Proud to have been an AE sailor. Served under CDR. Duremeyer and CAPT. Hanratty. Both were pretty crew oriented. Down to earth and respectable. It was a pretty wild ride. Lots of good times. Made a lot of good friends. Was great to be where I've been. Greece was the most beautiful place in the world. When I see pictures today, makes mr want to go back. Now I'm too old. After an organ transplant, I don't think the Navy would have me back again.

Comments:

I was assigned to the HC-3 Det. aboard Flint when we deployed to WestPac in 1976. It was an eventful cruise from the beginning. We were practicing towing during our transit with another ship (don't remember which one) and they side-swiped us as they came down the starboard side. Tore the nets off of the starboard side of the flight deck. The exercise was over. Then when we visited Cebu, we got stuck on a mud bar exiting the harbor as we were waving goodbye to the Mayor and other dignitaries from Cebu. Fortunately, the tide was coming in and we only spent an hour or so stuck there. Seems we passed on the wrong side of a buoy marking the channel because it was so rusty you couldn't tell what color it was. The helo det. spent most of it's time at NAS Cubi Point while the ship was at the ammunition pier. It was a delightful and restful cruise. Except for the time we hauled all that outdated ammunition up to Sasebo. Made you stop and think about what we were carrying.
On the Sacramento WestPac cruise in 1977 we were the first det. to deploy from HC-11. With our two H-46 helos we set a squadron record for flight hours when we flew just over 1000 hours. Most of the time the helos were aboard the Kitty Hawk servicing the rest of the ships. So those of us left on Sac. had plenty of time to relax and take care of paperwork. Not very exciting. Sacramento was a great ship, good crew, had a fun cruise. Now I see her occasionally when I drive by the Inactive Ship Facility at Bremerton. They also have some of the other ships I served in. I must be getting old.
