Hi Sue, I actually go all the way back to the start in Connecticut...I was just quiet back then. I drove my first horse in my teens and worked behind Belgiums and Percherons in the fields back in New England and New York State. Trained up a chuck to work single on my farm in West Berne, NY...even drove a six up in the Altamont fair - they were so broke they made it easy for me. I traveled the back roads with my kids and a donkey and cart in the 1970s. My interest and admiration for Bob goes back to Connecticut very soon after he started his blog...before he started the trip. And it has staying power, like you, because of the love for the horses and his adventures. My admiration for them is as high as my admiration for Bob and what he has done. Like you, I miss his traveling days and the adventures on the road. But like the pioneers, eventually they staked their claim and settled down...and I can't help but be happy for Bob for that. But I do wish he hitched a horse a cart of wagon and take us for drive on a nice Sunday once in awhile. All my best to you Bob and to Jacquie. And my best to you also, Sue.

Hi Wagonteamster!! It has been a pretty dry spell since hearing from you, and even an even drier one seeing those beautiful horses' butts plodding along. I know Bob and Bill are retired and it is great to see my personal favorite, Doc, filling in as a ranch horse. It would sure be nice to see pictures of them in their new home and see how they are all doing. I miss the old gang that rode along on your adventures. Mary Ann was a late comer on the rides, and she is still here, but so many of the others are either quiet or gone. If they do peruse this site, I wish them the best. The same for your Mom and Pop. God bless you and Jacquie, Hershey, Doc, and all the other critters. Viya Con Dios, my friend. Thanks for some good memories.

Bob, do you have plans to travel by wagon again, or are you going to travel in a more conventional, modern (RV) manner? Your photos are some of the most interesting and genuine I have found on these travel blog type sites. Hope to see you and your lady on the road again real soon.

Hi Bob,
I would like it if you took Mike's encouragement and come north, on up into British Columbia, Canada. Gorgeous country...the Okanogan is great, the Cariboo is great and yes, a good deal of old timers and many of we slightly younger teamsters (I don't think I'm an old timer yet) who would love to enjoy your coming through. I know your team is older and retired now. I hope you get a younger team and do more traveling...but maybe one of the teamsters up here would lend you a good team and even travel along with you with another of their teams, so you can travel this beautiful country. I can hope. Would be a treat for me to come visit your travels and a treat for those you travel past. It has been a long time since the Caravan Company wandered through the BC interior with teams. Surely lots of people who remember them, would love to see you travel through our beautiful province. Please do consider it, MaryAnna

Waldo was an easy one to find....... Gotta love Life cereal, and yes, I 'do like it".........

Dear Bob, I live up here on the North Okanogan and you are invited to swing through this great country. You may stay and rest as long as you need here at my place. 20 acres fenced and lots of nutritious high country grasses to munch(For your horses, You'll have to eat people food in the cabin). We on the Okanogan need you to come through here. You will find many old timers up here that once drove their own teams, still alive and ready to re-live it all with 'you'. I have followed your travels since day one years ago. I have a set of axels that will have a wagon on them some day soon. You are truly a free and inspiring person.

last year, I'd buy a few. Let me know. Oh, I'd like a little better result than last year though.

Hint, hint.

Bob, may the sun come up every day just to warm your backside. Take care everyone, LJR

Comments:

Hi Everyone!

I've been busy this winter! I've been painting walls at the local Women's Center and volunteering at a local barn with a trainer friend. I'm getting ready to kick off a new season of selling raffle tickets for the Washington Draft Horse and Mule Association. This year's raffle horse is a 6 year-old Belgian gelding named Ben. I haven't seen him in person (horse) yet, but he sure photographs pretty!

Spring has graced us early this year. The Tulip Festival has been moved forward by two weeks! We already have fields of Daffodils in full bloom. The blueberries have blossomed, and the Rhodies are considering their options! I feel so bad for our Eastern Friends, who have been neck deep in a miserable winter. I wish I could share some of our good fortune.

I love this time of year with all the plans for summer shimmering nearly within grasp. I miss the gang and their notorious leader. Here's hoping for travel news in the future!

Stay upwind of the road apples!
Connie

How very neat that several other guests here/writers are using or planning to use horses, mules and donkeys for transportation and making trips with them soon. I have three mammoth donkeys (expecting them to all be between 14 and 14.2hh). One is the mother of the other two (same Jack/sire). I'm just waiting for the youngsters to be old enough to go - planning a three abreast hitch. The youngsters are almost 2 and almost 3 now, so it will be as much as three years to hit the road. But they can pull a cart as they grow up. The mother is trained to ride and drive. It would be great to be able to share experiences and plans. Happy for you all and hope we can connect. Well, Wagon Teamster, it is humpday in the first month of 2015. Things are quiet on the home front all the way around. You are looking out of a glassed in porch, I am looking out of windows too. I have to admit, you have a much prettier view than I. Those mountains with their snow caps are beautiful, but I will be thrilled to see the green, yellow, reds, and purples start popping up around here. We do have a hawk that sits in the bare old tree across the road and from the looks of him, the mice are plentyful for he is nicely filled out. I know, I repeat myself, but I HATE winter. I really was looking forward to some of the beautiful country you always share with us. I miss seeing Doc, Bill and Bob traipsing down the highways and byways. From the sound of it, even short trips are going to be few and far between as you will be hunting a job. Also, you haven't said you were looking into a new team to replace our old comrads and that sort of closes the gates for sure on trips. Thank you for giving us several years of pleasure. I will keep checking in to see if you are up to anything. Hi to all our traveling buddies. I miss all of you guys. Take care of yourselves. God bless you all. Viya Con Dios.

Comments:

Hi Bob,

I came across your site as I was searching for information about how much horses can comfortably pull for a Christmastime post for Horse Lover's Math about sleigh rides. I would love to create a post, maybe even several posts, about your travels. There is plenty of math involved, what with the dimensions of your wagon, the speed at which your horses travel, how big they are, how much they eat, the physics of going uphill—you get the idea.

Please check out the Horse Lover's Math website (http://www.horseloversmath.com). I've done some similar posts, one about renting a Gypsy caravan for a summer holiday in Ireland (http://www.horseloversmath.com/horse-drawncampingtrip) and another about Bernice Ende, a Long Rider (http://www.horseloversmath.com/monthsinthesaddle).

Hope you and your horses are doing well. Have a Merry Christmas!

Happy Trails,
Deborah Stacey

Dave Ayers, It's nice to hear from you. If you only have ten in the barn, they must be the ten best-broke haflingers anywhere! 20 years from now I can picture you driving a 40 horse hitch like you drove for Dick Sparrow, but minis instead of Belgians. Of course, you'll need an elevator to get up on the wagon - ha ha. Best wishes to you and your family for Christmas. I'm doing great. Tomorrow, I'm horseback, in the mountains, rounding up a few stray bulls.

Bob, glad to see your back on-line but I hate to see the hot iron branding. Why don't they use freeze branding like they do on the wild mustangs that the ranchers are trying to run off public land. I do know the BLM puts them up for adoption but many go to slaughter in Canada & Mexico.
What are going to do with the lads and when are you going to get new horses?

The best site I have found so far to follow this horse drawn caravan is on facebook.com. I went in & found Gerard Paagman (one of the sponsors and participants) and friended him. Now I can see each day his posts and others in the caravan. Quite a few Friesians (horse). Gerard is from Canada now (originally from Netherlands). Several video clips to watch. They are in the desert right now and "it is dry as dust, buster". Those Friesians move right out and there are several people riding Friesians and other horses/mules. They have to trot every step of the way also. 20 to 25 miles a day - if their butts weren't tough before, they will be before long:)If the horses weren't accustomed to big flags flying off the wagons/carriages at the beginning of the trip, I'm guessing by the end of the first day they were.

Have you heard about Thecaravan.me – transcontinental wagon train from San Diego CA to Florida – starts 11/1 (yesterday) and ends in March sometime. Dozens of participants at different times. Some very cool information about the whole thing. Incredible idea with parts of free trips from disabled people. Time on trips for other who like to go and pay. Opportunity to donate and have your name in the credits etc on the film that comes after the trip. And on and on. Fun stuff to follow I believe. Theyhave a facebook page facebook.com/thecaravan.me

Hi to all. I have missed all of you almost as much as I have missed seeing those broad butts going down a road. I was looking forward to trip #5 but understand the reasoning for putting it on the back burner. The Amigos have always come first. I have enjoyed catching up on the Wagonteamster's Blog. Nice to know he will soon be back with us. At least the last picture I saw was the 4 Amigo's butts looking back at us as they ate their dinner. I hope all of you have had a pleasant summer. I have kept up with a few of you on your Face Book pages. That is nice. Alice has had a few good trips. I envied her her trip to the Shawnee National Forest. That is in my territory. A beautiful place. I could almost smell the fresh forest air and feel the horse under me again. I hope all of you spent your time enjoying life. God bless you all. Hurry home Bob. We need some adventure.

Bob, I am so sorry to hear about Bill. I guess he is getting old, but he has been a darn good horse! I am sure he will have a wonderful retirement. I will miss him as I still miss the ones that got hurt when you were hit years ago. I was thinking the other day....I have been following your blog since trip #1.
