Well, Wagon Teamster, it is humpday in the first month of 2015. Things are quiet on the home front all the way around. You are looking out of a glassed in porch, I am looking out of windows too. I have to admit, you have a much prettier view than I. Those mountains with their snow caps are beautiful, but I will be thrilled to see the green, yellow, reds, and purples start popping up around here. We do have a hawk that sits in the bare old tree across the road and from the looks of him, the mice are plentyful for he is nicely filled out. I know, I repeat myself, but I HATE winter. I really was looking forward to some of the beautiful country you always share with us. I miss seeing Doc, Bill and Bob traipsing down the highways and byways. From the sound of it, even short trips are going to be few and far between as you will be hunting a job. Also, you haven't said you were looking into a new team to replace our old comrads and that sort of closes the gates for sure on trips. Thank you for giving us several years of pleasure. I will keep checking in to see if you are up to anything. Hi to all our traveling buddies. I miss all of you guys. Take care of yourselves. God bless you all. Viya Con Dios.

Comments:

Hi Bob,

I came across your site as I was searching for information about how much horses can comfortably pull for a Christmastime post for Horse Lover's Math about sleigh rides. I would love to create a post, maybe even several posts, about your travels. There is plenty of math involved, what with the dimensions of your wagon, the speed at which your horses travel, how big they are, how much they eat, the physics of going uphill—you get the idea.

Please check out the Horse Lover's Math website (http://www.horseloversmath.com). I've done some similar posts, one about renting a Gypsy caravan for a summer holiday in Ireland (http://www.horseloversmath.com/horse-drawncampingtrip) and another about Bernice Ende, a Long Rider (http://www.horseloversmath.com/monthsinthesaddle).

Hope you and your horses are doing well. Have a Merry Christmas!

Happy Trails,
Deborah Stacey

Dave Ayers, It's nice to hear from you. If you only have ten in the barn, they must be the ten best-broke haflingers anywhere! 20 years from now I can picture you driving a 40 horse hitch like you drove for Dick Sparrow, but minis instead of Belgians. Of course, you'll need an elevator to get up on the wagon - ha ha. Best wishes to you and your family for Christmas. I'm doing great. Tomorrow, I'm horseback, in the mountains, rounding up a few stray bulls.

I came across this link to a bit of reading through a driving group on line and I thought you might like to read it and drive along with it - it is most entertaining...since we are not traveling along any miles with Bob right now. It is a fun read and a fun drive (but none of Bob's great pictures along, we must use only our imagination)...I must say. Wish all you other WagonTeamster fans all the best and a Happy US Thanksgiving. You too Bob. http://www.jacklondons.net/four_horses.html

Bob, glad to see your back on-line but I hate to see the hot iron branding. Why don't they use freeze branding like they do on the wild mustangs that the ranchers are trying to run off public land. I do know the BLM puts them up for adoption but many go to slaughter in Canada & Mexico.
What are going to do with the lads and when are you going to get new horses?

The best site I have found so far to follow this horse drawn caravan is on facebook.com. I went in & found Gerard Paagman (one of the sponsors and participants) and friended him. Now I can see each day his posts and others in the caravan. Quite a few Friesians (horse). Gerard is from Canada now (originally from Netherlands). Several video clips to watch. They are in the desert right now and "it is dry as dust, buster". Those Friesians move right out and there are several people riding Friesians and other horses/mules. They have to trot every step of the way also. 20 to 25 miles a day - if their butts weren't tough before, they will be before long:)If the horses weren't accustomed to big flags flying off the wagons/carriages at the beginning of the trip, I'm guessing by the end of the first day they were.

Have you heard about Thecaravan.me – transcontinental wagon train from San Diego CA to Florida – starts 11/1 (yesterday) and ends in March sometime. Dozens of participants at different times. Some very cool information about the whole thing. Incredible idea with parts of free trips from disabled people. Time on trips for other who like to go and pay. Opportunity to donate and have your name in the credits etc on the film that comes after the trip. And on and on. Fun stuff to follow I believe. Theyhave a facebook page facebook.com/thecaravan.me

Hi to all. I have missed all of you almost as much as I have missed seeing those broad butts going down a road. I was looking forward to trip #5 but understand the reasoning for putting it on the back burner. The Amigos have always come first. I have enjoyed catching up on the Wagonteamster's Blog. Nice to know he will soon be back with us. At least the last picture I saw was the 4 Amigo's butts looking back at us as they ate their dinner. I hope all of you have had a pleasant summer. I have kept up with a few of you on your Face Book pages. That is nice. Alice has had a few good trips. I envied her her trip to the Shawnee National Forest. That is in my territory. A beautiful place. I could almost smell the fresh forest air and feel the horse under me again. I hope all of you spent your time enjoying life. God bless you all. Hurry home Bob. We need some adventure.

crickets somewhere in the house, dang it, and Bob's in Nebraska. Yep sure sign winter is starting it's engine
for a big blow. I wonder where my long johns are? I'll have to get on better terms with Kathy, my wife of almost
fifty years come late October, cold nights will make you do that. And I didn't win that horse in Washington. Yep looks like a long winter. Keep warm Bob and gang.

Comments:

Bob
I see you were wise enough to write your schedule in pencil. A wise man knows when to grab the eraser and make adjustments. Sometimes we just have to change the color of our adventures. If you are able to load one or two of the Amigos in that new trailer and visit Children and Folks in the retirement centers, we both know their smiles and memories will be just as big and deep as if you had just driven them in from parts somewhere beyond. Making new memories and reliving old was your goal from the get go. Time and life make changes we do not foresee, but that is not neccesarily bad. I just pitched my work shoes in the waste bin and our Uncle Sam started sending me an old timers check, so I am ripe for an adventure. A drive from Wisconsin to the North West could end up in the plans, so be wary when those pupdogs you have get yapping at a Cheese head pulling in the drive.

Hi Bob,
After meeting Lee the Horselogger several years ago in north central Ohio, I would like to know if you might come our way any time in your future plans? We are about half way between Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio, about 10 or 12 miles south of U. S. Route 20. Winter is not a good time to travel by horse drawn caravan in Ohio, but maybe next spring, summer or early fall? That would be great. My husband, son and I would surely be happy to meet you and hear about your travels. Good luck to you and God speed.

Our claim to fame is driving a 4 horse hitch of Percherons to the top of Mount Washington in New Hampshire - was fun - not near at all close to your adventures, but it was an adventure for us. We hope you and your horses are doing well. Best regards, Judy Paisley

Hi Everyone!

I'm home from the Fair! No, I didn't win the raffle horse, and neither did Larry! Oh well, such is life.....However, it was a fun, interesting and educational week anyway. Those draft horses were absolutely magnificent!! Huge, regal and gentle. What a creation! I'll never really be able to get my fill of them.

I learned I'm not the camper I used to be! I need a good bed at night now. I can't deny it any longer, I have to get a camper of some sort. Tenting doesn't do it for me anymore.

I learned I can wash my hair and bathe the essential parts in less than 2 Quarts of warm water! Needless to say, I took a nice hot shower when I got home!

Good walking shoes are a gift to your feet. I have a good pair. Don't be afraid to invest a little money in a good pair of shoes.

Fairs in late August require a hat with a brim. Luckily, I have one of those too! But I bought a silly little parasol just because....

So, Friends, get out and enjoy your local, county and state fairs this season. Support your local farmers, 4H, FFA, businesses and agricultural organizations! We all need to eat.

Love to all!
Connie

Hi Everyone!

Summer in Western Washington finally arrived! We've had a few weeks of lovely weather. Just enough to wear a sleeveless shirt long enough to even out my farmer's tan! Last Spring I joined the Washington Draft Horse and Mule Association and have been having a fun time with that. Looks like I'm going to be working the Raffle the Association sponsors each year at the Evergreen State Fair at the end of August. This year's raffle grand prize is a 3 year old Clydesdale filly that is green broke to harness, single and double, and to the saddle. I bought 10 tickets myself! I've had my hands on this filly, and she's a peach. Here's hoping I can manage 6 days of State Fair! I'll report back!

Here's to winning the raffle!!

Bob,
I'm 14 years old now but years ago you stayed in my back yard, you set up the fences and got comfortable. You told me and my family stories. I found you so interesting. I was so happy you stayed with us especially with my love of horses. You had the most beautiful horses I have ever seen I remember waking up in the morning before I had to go to school just wanting to stay home so I could look at them all day. You are very inspiring and just a extremely nice and caring person. I hope you have the best time on your new adventures.

I do hope the Amigos are doing well in their retirement. I know you still take Doc out once in awhile on your adventures close to home and I enjoy seeing and reading of your new adventures. Do you still use B.O.B. or Bill in anyway to keep them in shape? Monty seems to have matured well over the winter. Why not put some pictures on here of the boys, Hershey, and the improvements you have made to the place. I know there are mini's to see and the boys barn. I bet your water fall flower bed was beautiful to see this spring and now summer. At least it would be something to let us know you are still alive. God bless you, Jacquie, Doc, the Belgians, Hershey, and all you hold dear.

Hi Bob, Have been keeping up with you for a very long time. I love the horses and following your adventures. My own carriage horse (Spotted Draft) passed last summer, and I miss her lots. I have also been interested in your powerplant adventures and was wondering if you might be interested in a book a friend of mine wrote. The book is about the plutonium plant in Hanford, WA. Not far from your location as the crow flies. The book is called: Hanford's Secret Clouds of Despair by Claudia Hagen. Here is a link to her website if you are interested: http://www.claudiahagen.com/products.html

Enjoy your summer, keep on fishing and working those cattle. Love doing both, and I have done plenty in past years. Give my best to ol' Bill and B.O.B. and, of course, that precious Doc. Monty, Hershey Bar and the other little dog, too.

Bob a Veterinarian friend of mine that s trying to retire told me the other
day that he had bought a small a small boat and had taken up fishing. He tells me that
he really does enjoy getting on the water and and dropping a line in and just relaxing.
He tells me he goes out about three times a week so far and is starting to get the hang of it.
As a matter of fact if he still likes it by the end of September, he may even buy a hook for that fishing pole.

May the sun come up every day just to warm your backside. ljr.

I started following your blog when you were on your trip south that ended abruptly

Bob,
Thanks for your updates. I enjoy hearing about and seeing your horse adventures. You have the unique ability to take the bumps in the road with humor. Maybe I'll see you on the road.

found him on the internet in 2009

Bob, I had stopped checking your website after you moved to Oregon - I got busy with my life and one day bored and even had to remember the website... but glad to see you are still posting. I followed a blog of another long distance rider, Freerangerodeo.com and followed her trip from California to Maine! Hope your horse does well! Just thought I would drop in and say HI!

Hi, Bob:

It's been awhile since I've written...just wanted to say that I'm glad to see you're still traversing our beautiful country with your furry friends. Glad that Bill is officially retired...he's been a good partner in your travels and I am sure you will miss him being with you on the road, but you'll bond with new horses quickly as you have that kind of heart (and horses do, too) and I'm sure you'll feel good knowing that your old friends are safe and comfy and relaxing after years of devoted service. You take excellent care of your horses and that makes me even happier and prouder to be a fan of you and your travels. Admittedly, it had been awhile since I read your blogs, but now I am up to speed again. I'll be watching for your future travel stories. What memories you are making and sharing with others...it's such a blessing and I thank you for that. Please accept my condolences for the recent loss of your grandfather...I'm sure he'll be traveling alongside you in spirit. Be happy and stay safe. I'll keep praying for the safety of you and your team. Take care and God Bless.

Sincerely,

Marjorie Sherman
Lexington, SC
