Comments:

I wanted to mention a few of my favorite teachers who I feel were real solid role models and just plain old "good people."

Mrs. Connell who taught CORE in seventh grade at Benjamin Stoddert Junior High school and Mrs. Linda Bathaung, my three year Journalism teacher at Potomac Senior High School.

Along with Mrs Marshall (eighth grade American Literature teacher) from Stoddert and Mrs. Kalabokes (Spanish Teacher at Potomac), these ladies left a BIG impression on me.

Thank you for your great service and for going above and beyond the call of duty!

We moved to Marlow Heights from Deal Maryland, via Anchorage, Alaska in 1969. WE still had Alaska Tags on our Rambler Station Wagon. Dad. Mom and three boys (myself, Ken and Dan).

I was entering seventh grade. I met a cool kid named Steve Hughes at Stoddert and we became fast friends for many years. Steve got me a job working with him for Nick Kalivretenos and William "Chips" Chipouras at the Docktor (correct spelling!) Pet Center at Iverson Mall through High School. I will never forget Pina Coladas and Fried Chicken after work at Chip's house and the pizzas and beer after late night Basketball at the outdoor Courts near the Marlow Heights Recreation Center!

Thanks Steve.

I went off to work in sales at the Holiday Spa in Springfield, Virginia and never looked back. I have been an entrepreneur ever since....

Comments:

An older neighbor a couple blocks down from my old childhood home place in District Heights just told me about a published memoir written about the 1950s-1960s teenage street gangs in District Heights. The book nostalgically covers the "Parkland Demons," the "Bachelors" and their evolution into the "Apollos."
Here is the pertinent information:
"The Apollos" by Jack D'Ambrosio (Baltimore: Publish America) 2009.
ISBN: 1-60836-452-6 (softcover) 978-1-4489-2859-0 (hardcover)

Lived on lower end of 24th ave.
Mother was Girl Scout leader at Green Valley and Stoddert. My mother organized the scout troops to help with
distribution of polio vaccine held at Marlow Heights shopping center. I have pictures of this.
Best teachers at Stoddert - Gates 8th grade English; Butler - US History, Burns - Algebra, San Flippo -Science, Shaw - music. Yeah, I had Scott for 7th grade Core.
Anyone remember Mrs. Crozier? Had her two years in a row for math.
Did you know Mrs. Cola, principal at Green Valley lived upper end of 24th ave? She looked like the wicked witch of the west from Wizard of Oz. Who could ever forget her purple hair and bright red sharp fingernails?
Love to hear from John Williams, Henry Hill and Billy Barnes. Heard they all became cops.

I remember the Murphy's store at Hillcrest Heights where I bought my first trixie belden mysteries;the restaurant at Hecht's. I remember the opening of Iverson Mall and how exciting we all thought it was.

BTW, a lot of people knew me as Chris Shipp then. Would love to hear from old friends.

Comments:

I lived in Suitland from 1959 to 1973. My brother and sister are 8 and 10 years older and went to Suitland Elementary, Suitland Jr and Suitland Sr. Jim played football at Suitland Sr and graduated in 1969. Linda graduated in 1967. I was in the first class to matriculate from Berkshire Elementary but by the early 70s, PG County had started the busing program and my folks decided to send me to a private school in Upper Marlboro, Queen Annes. Lots of my friends went to Mt Cavalry, LaReinne and McNamara. Also, Suitland Jr. My Mom worked at the census bureau in the Scudari building in Marlow Heights. I remember going to Hechts and Woodies and when Iverson Mall opened my friends and I became the first "mall rats." Boy do I remember Grits, Macs, Chucks and Peters jackets. My brother worked at the Red Barn and got caught spraypainting on Madam Tillies palm reading sign - he was spraypainting away all the fingers except the middle finger. My friends and I used to walk to the duck pin bowling alley on Penn ave and Silver Hill road, also the A&P. We like to play in the "gravel pits" behind our neighborhood and would walk to the new McDonalds on Silver Hill Road. I remember doing a paper and the Suitland Library on Silver Hill road and using a very early generation xerox machine to copy some research material. Dad worked downtown for the government. He is Italian American and used to shop at Fleishman's Village italian grocery - we especially lived the bread. I remember Nick's car wash where Mom would get her Dodge Dart washed and I would watch through the window as the car went through. Before Suitland, my parents and siblings lived in a duplex on Lyons street just a few blocks from Iverson Mall. My orthodondist was in DC on Penn Ave right next to a Mighty Mo's - is that the Mighty Mo's you refer to? Mom would always take me for ice cream after getting my braces tightened. My sister told me Overlook Drive in DC was a big makeout site - moved before I got the chance to use it. Ha!

My favorite teacher, of all times, was Mrs. Foster (6th grade). I just Googled her name and Hillcrest Heights and found this site - how neat. Brought back lots of memories. I can't remember my address - lived next door to the Sterrett family. I have to see if I can find any papers from waaay back then. I'll share them if I do.

Being able to play outside anytime day or night. Running in the creek and through the woods. Exploring in the drain pipes. I lived on the last block before the woods and the opening was right in front of my house.

Comments:

Wish I had found this site years ago. Remembered some names, grabbed my yearbook and started looking people up. It was a great place to be a kid. Went on google earth to look at my childhood home. They have filled in the huge culvert we would play in, guess its for the best.

I came to the area in the late 70's. My parents adored my principal Mr. Callabucci(?) at Middleton Valley.
I knew he went on to be a coach briefly at Crossland, wanted to know whatever happened to him. My family moved away in the 90's, and my parents always get nostalgic when they hear about the area on the news...

What are some of your best memories of growing up in the area?:

Too many to recount

Comments:

My first job ever was at the Jr Hot Shoppes, before there was an Inverson Mall, right after they first opened. The line to the counter stretched around the parking lot and we out grossed the top 3 McDonalds in the Metro area. That was hustling. And I worked for $1.10/hr. What eventually became the Iverson Mall parking lot was an empty field were I would go riding my bike thru the bike trails and bramble that was everywhere back there. Also worked at the Hobby Shop next to the store where the full service Hot Shoppes was. One of my last jobs before I moved away to school was at the 14th Street Marriott downtown. Great experience. Family liked to bowl, so we patronized the Bowl America (?) a lot. Mom was a league secretary and I was able to bowl an entire sheet of games for 25 cents! I even got to work there and participated in tearing out the old machines on one side in order to make way for what was back then the next generation of pin setters. Ohh! Our next door neighbor was a muscle man for the mafia although I didn't know it at the time. I never understood why all of a sudden he was gone and nobody would tell me where he went or when he would come home. His family continued to live there for years after his disappearance.

Can anybody tell me whatever happened to Sandymount Elementary? It doesn't look right from Google Maps and the street level view looks like there is a chain link fence across the entrance. Can't believe all the huge trees that are on the streets. Nobody ever thought of planting trees at the street when I was growing up.

Comments:

Really enjoyed the sub-page on Grits and Blocks, it helped fuel a conversation on the ridiculous violence now ongoing in the DC and PG African-American community over the latest Helly Hansen jackets, that are apparently "to die for." It was fun to reminiscence about those white working class greasers, who would never have paid anywhere close to $450 for a foreign-made winter jacket. Back then, all that fashion was very much union-made in the USA.
