Updating my post. Why? New email address & phone number (909-600-8288). Still looking for old(?) IOIC & Photo Lab shipmates. Especially: Benny ARKWRIGHT, Tony AVENEVOLI, GILLAM, Tom KAMINSKY, George STURGIS, Steve YOUNG. It still saddens me to realize that our beloved ship is currently on her final journey to the breakers. So undeserving, for a fine & valiant ship. Lastly, God bless Capt. Leo B. McCUDDIN. The finest C.O. (10May65-7Jun66) I ever had! "USS Ranger, FOREVER!"

Comments:

AT3 AT2 AT1 Burningham VAQ-137 Prowlers, USS Ranger CV-61. I arrived to late
to be in the 80-81 WESTPAC Cruise book. I'm in the WESTPAC 82 cruise book
page 288 (PG 280 on WEB version), under stragglers,
http://www.navysite.de/cruisebooks/cv61-82/280.htm. Back then there was no
SEAOPDET all squadrons assigned personnel to the ship for aircraft
maintenance AIMD shops. They deployed with the squadrons and returned home
with them and were reassigned to the base AIMD departments upon arrival,
after a short respite of course. I was attached to VAQ-137 the "ROOKS" when
they were flying the ALQ-99 EXCAP-I version of the EA-6B Prowlers. My first
cruise on the Ranger I started out TAD to the Galley as I was an ATAN (E3),
then later assigned to the AT shop with AT1 Marsh in charge and AT2 Mahieu
as assistant supervisor. I didn't do so well in the shop so I asked to be
transferred to AIMD where I excelled and as a result of that I still work
for the Navy and Marine Corps on contract fixing Aircraft Test Sets at
DRP-36 at NASJRB New Orleans. I have many fond memories on the Ranger and in
ports all over the world. I was saddened to here she was going to be
scrapped instead of being turned into a museum.
To all the guys I served with, thanks for all the good times. PS the shop
number is (504) 678-0829.
A.K.Burningham, USNR-TAR RET. June 1979 to Oct 1999

PS, I'm sure you've seen the 9 part YouTube Ranger tour. The guy did a pretty
good job I thought.
You should put it on your main page as YouTube Ranger
Tour. Here's the name and link: USS Ranger Tour #1

P-1, ENG Logroom, P-3

Comments:

I was really surprised at her size as this was my first ship (and only ship). I checked and assigned to P-1 Div. Later transferred to the ENG LOGROOM and eventually P-3 Div.I served 2 west pacs and became a Trusty Shellback on my first when we were heading to Australia. I was hoping one day to take a tour through her again, but appears that won't happen. It is strange how the Navy took a one cent payment for the ship and yet a foundation was going to keep her around forever. Shows what we all learned when the Navy paid 30 dollars for a five dollar hammer. Money is nothing. Sure will miss the girl. I am building a wooden model to replicate her and the have a headstone to match so she will always be near. With all us staying in touch our memories will never die. Take care shipmates.

Comments:

"Hand Salute", and a little water in the eyes; I will miss her, since she started what would come to be a wonderful, rewarding career, and provided for me more great memories and important lessons than I can count - as a very young HM3/HM2. I will always appreciate her and her crew members who served with me - particularly those Medical "Docs". Will always stop and smile when I hear the "William Tell Overture"...makes me want to go check "material condition yoke"...
