Dear Sir,

Concerning the murder of Lord Leitrim.

My great-great Grandfather, Patrick McCollum, changed the spelling of his name to Patrick McCallum and immigrated to the U.S. in 1894, family legend has it that he was under investigation by the authorities (British?) concerning the murder of Lord Liethman.

He was living in a cottage on College Street next to the Sheil Hospital in Ballyshannon. Supposedly, the British destroyed the house about the time he left or soon after.

The information we have is from a great aunt (Rose) who told the family history to the Donegal Association and it is published in a document, I can send to you if you wish.

As Lord Litmen was murdered in 1878 and Patrick and family did not leave Ireland until 1894/5, I don't see how he could have been the target of the investigation.

Aunt Rose claims he was not involved in the murder, but may have had some information about the murderer or their whereabouts?

The only connection I can think of was he suppossedly worked for Dr. Sheil (jr) and as one of the murders has the last name Sheil, could there be some connection?

Patrick is decribed as a "personal assistent" to doctor Sheil, but, as he worked on ships, as far as we can tell most of his life, I am thinking that he may have worked for the Dr.'s shipping interest, which I read were extensive.

He may have met someone on a ship or someone related to the doctor that knew about the Killing?

But, from reading your article it sounds like they knew who did the killing, so why would they still be investigating and threatening people 17 years later?

Patrick married a Rose Dolan from the area.

Any thoughts or knowledge would be helpful.

Richard McCallum (McCollum)

Great site. Very interesting.
Does anyone know anything of any Clements families from Donegal? My Clements family were in Fahan, Donegal from at least the 1780's through to the 1850's.

Thanks
Rob

Enjoyed the telling but the story typifies the way the English Goverment treated the Irish.

My G.Grandfather Bernard Cox was born near Cloone c1837 he was the son of Patrick and Mary Cox who emigrated to Preston in the 1850's wth their sons Bernard,Thomas,James and John and daughters Ann and Margaret. They possibly had a son Patrick and a daughter Mary as well.Bernard and Ann's baptism and the marriage seem to have been at Bornacoola RC Church and the other siblings baptisms in Cloone RC Church.Bernard married a Fermanagh girl RoseHannah Lunny in Preston in 1858 and the family may have moved to Fermanagh before arrriving in Preston as all their neighbours appear to be from Fermanagh.

Dear Fiona,
Traveling through County Leitrim we discovered your wonderful book. Some of the stories I had heard about my great-grandfather (Frank Conlon) seemed to fit into a story I read in your book. Would it be possible to contact you more directly? Unable to reach you through the email address given on this site.
Sincerely,
Louis J. Licciardi

I spent many an hour on the grounds of Lough Rynn just reading, napping in the sun or meandering about the acreage; an occasional walk with Seamus O'Callaghan's Black Lab "Rambo." Lough Rynn must be even more spectacular now than it was when I lived in Mohill 1988-90. Providing I can pay by check I would like to purchase this wonderful book.

I love to stop by this site now and again to see what's new. Keep up the wonderful work.

I would absolutely LOVE to visit Ireland and if I like it when I visit I plan to live their eventually. My ancestors and family tree originated in Ireland and I would like to go back home so to speak. Don't let all of the B.S. fool you, America isn't all that it's supposed to be. Slowly, but surely we are losing the rights that earlier American patriots fought and died for mainly due to political correctness and the government wanting to maintain control of the people. God bless Ireland.

My family on my fathers side were Shiels of Kindum/Ballyhiernan. My grandfather, who died when my father was a boy, was a vet. The family house was in Ballyhiernan, on the hill just above the loch. I would like to find any information about my grandfather/grandmother or any extended family outside of the UK.
